World Forestry Day 2023: History
The first International Day of Forests was celebrated on March 21, 2013. The International Day of Forests was declared by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2012. The purpose of the day is to recognise and spread awareness of the value of all types of forests. On this day, nations are urged to arrange events involving forests and trees, such as tree-planting programmes, at the local, state, and international levels. In collaboration with governments, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests, and other relevant organisations in the area, the United Nations Forum on Forests and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) organised the event.
The first celebration of the day took place in 1971 when the "States members" decided to make March 21 each year the designated "World Forestry Day" during the 16th session of the Conference of the Food and Agricultural Organization in November of that year.
Six Forest Days were organised by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) from 2007 to 2012 in connection with the yearly conferences of the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. By resolution of the UN General Assembly on November 28, 2012, the International Day of Forests was created following the International Year of Forests in 2011.
