Weather Update: IMD Forecasts Rain, Hailstorms, Cold Wave, and Dense Fog Across Northeast, Northwest, and Northern India, Including Delhi, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts for several regions of India, forecasting rainfall, cold wave conditions, and dense fog over the next few days. Northeastern states are expected to receive light to moderate rainfall, with hailstorms in Sikkim and Assam, while a Western Disturbance is set to bring snowfall to the Western Himalayas. Cold wave conditions are likely in parts of Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan, and dense fog is predicted to disrupt visibility in northern and eastern states. Here’s a detailed weather forecast for the coming days.

Northeastern States to Experience Rain and Hailstorm

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports a trough in the middle and upper tropospheric westerlies and a cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam. This system is likely to cause:

  • Light to Moderate Rainfall at many places, accompanied by thunderstorms at isolated locations in the northeastern states on January 8th.

  • Isolated Hailstorms over Sikkim and north Assam

Western Disturbance to Bring Rain and Snow to Northwest India

A fresh Western Disturbance is expected to interact with easterly winds, affecting northwest India from January 10th to 12th. The IMD predicts:

  • Light to Moderate Rainfall/Snowfall in the Western Himalayan region.

  • Light Rainfall over plains in northwest India during this period.

Temperature Trends and Cold Wave Warnings

The IMD forecasts a 2-4°C temperature drop in Northwest, Central, and East India, with a gradual rise later. Dense fog is likely in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, while ground frost may occur in parts of Himachal Pradesh. Cold wave conditions are expected in Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan, urging caution.

Temperature Forecast:

  • Northwest and Central India: Drop of 2-4°C over the next two days, followed by a gradual rise.

  • East India: Similar drop over the next two days, with stable temperatures thereafter.

  • Maharashtra and Gujarat: Temperatures to fall by 2-3°C, rising again in the following days.

Cold Wave Alerts:

  • Himachal Pradesh: Isolated cold wave conditions from January 8th to 9th.

  • West Rajasthan: Cold wave conditions on January 8th.

Dense Fog and Frost Warnings

  • Very Dense Fog:

    • Likely in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh during January 8th-10th.

    • Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim to experience dense fog until January 8th.

  • Ground Frost: Expected in isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh from January 8th to 9th.

Weather Forecast for Delhi/NCR 

Delhi/NCR are set to experience chilly weather with cold day conditions at isolated places over the next few days. Clear to partly cloudy skies will dominate, accompanied by smog and varying fog intensities, ranging from shallow to very dense during morning and evening hours. Winds will remain light, primarily from the northwest and southeast directions, with temperatures staying low during this period.
