Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader, demanded compensation and jobs from the Centre on Tuesday for the families of farmers who died during the year-long agitation against the three agricultural laws on the outskirts of Delhi.
During the Zero Hour, Rahul criticized the Modi administration for failure to maintain data on farmer death during the year-long protest and introduced a list of farmers who were compensated and given jobs in Punjab.
Congress MPs demanded a statement from the government on the issue and walked out of the House with NCP and DMK members, raising anti-government slogans.
"Approximately 700 farmers died during the farmers' agitation. The Prime Minister apologized to the farmers and admitted his mistake. On November 30, the agricultural minister was questioned, "How many farmers perished during the agitation? The agriculture minister said that he lacked data "The congress member stated.
"We discovered that the Punjab government had compensated over 400 farmers with amounts totaling five lakh rupees. 152 of the 400 farmers have also been granted jobs. I have another list of 70 Haryana farmers "Gandhi said.
"The Prime Minister had apologized and your government is saying that no farmer has died or you do not have the list of farmers. These are the names here," the former Congress president said before submitting the lists in Lok Sabha.
"I want that the farmers be given their rights. The Prime Minister has already apologized. Now, farmers should get compensation and jobs," the Lok Sabha member from Wayanad said.
A meeting was held on Saturday during which the future course of the farmers agitation based on pending demands of farmers were discussed. These demands include a legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP) and rehabilitation for kin of the farmers who died during the agitation, among others.
The next meeting of SKM will be held today. The winter session of the Parliament commenced on November 29 and is scheduled on December 23.
