In a significant move towards the enhancement of fishing infrastructure, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Parshottam Rupala, along with Minister for ports, shipping & waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, will lay the foundation stone for the modernization and upgradation of Paradip Fishing Harbour on January 8, 2024. The project, undertaken by the Paradip Port Authority, has received approval from the Central Government and is set to bring about transformative changes to the fishing industry in Odisha.
The modernization efforts are expected to improve the lives of thousands of fishermen and allied workers who depend on the harbor for their livelihoods. Additionally, the project will generate new employment opportunities, both skilled and unskilled, thereby contributing to the economic growth of the region.
Central Funding for Paradip Fishing Harbour Modernization
The Central Government has granted approval to the Paradip Port Authority's proposal for the Modernisation and Upgradation of Paradip Fishing Harbour. The estimated cost of the project stands at Rs 108.91 Crore, with 100% central financial assistance under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). The project is aligned with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways under the Sagarmala Scheme. The completion period for this ambitious endeavor is set at 18 months.
Revitalizing Paradip Fishing Harbour
Paradip Fishing Harbour, covering an enclosed area of approximately 43 acres, is a key fishing hub in Odisha, situated on the right bank of the Mahanadi River, 2 km upstream of the river mouth in Jagatsinghpur District. Initially designed to accommodate a specific number of vessels, the current usage far exceeds the original capacity, with around 640 vessels and 100 Gill Netter (FRP boats) utilizing the harbor facilities.
Holistic Upgradation for Improved Conditions
The modernization and upgradation of Paradip Fishing Harbour aim to enhance hygienic conditions, making the harbor cleaner and aesthetically appealing. This project will involve upgrading existing facilities and providing new, efficient infrastructure. Mechanizing the fish processing and implementing good management practices will contribute to overall efficiency.
Key Components of the Project
The project includes the construction of a new Auction Hall, Commercial Complex, Extension of Quay Wall, Shore Protection Works, Renovation of existing Auction Hall, Gear Shed, Fish Packing Shed, Ice Crushing Hall, First Aid Centre, Raising of Compound Wall, Electrical Works, Overhead Water Tank, Solar Power Plant, Solar Lights, Navigational Aids/Radio Communication Equipment, ETP, Fire Fighting Equipment, Market Complex, and paving of roads, along with landscaping and other ancillary utilities & services.
