Heatwave Alert! Govt Issues Fresh Guidelines as Deadly Heatwaves Likely to Hit These States

On May 11, the Indian Meteorological Department predicted heat waves in various regions of Rajasthan, as well as isolated pockets in Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi, that would last until May 16. Heatwaves may cause moderate health concerns for vulnerable persons in heat-affected locations, such as infants, the elderly, and people with chronic conditions.

On May 11, heatwave conditions were seen in most portions of West Rajasthan and isolated pockets in West Madhya Pradesh, according to the IMD.

Government released guidelines for schools

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education released rules on May 11 for schools to follow regarding food, classroom ventilation, and transportation arrangements to fight the effects of the heatwave.

According to government requirements, schools should commence at 7:00 a.m. and end by noon. "The number of school hours each day could be cut. Sports and other outside activities that expose kids to direct sunlight should be adjusted in the early morning, according to an official statement. It reminded schools to hold school assemblies undercover or in classrooms with a shorter time limit.

School buses must not carry more students than their seating capacity, according to guidelines for transporting children to school. In the bus or van, there should be drinking water and a first-aid kit. Students who walk or ride their bikes to school should be urged to cover their heads, according to the guidelines.

In addition to encouraging students to bring their water bottles, hats, and umbrellas, schools should guarantee that there is enough drinking water available in different locations.

Rainfall Forecast in India

The meteorological office predicted widespread light/moderate rainfall throughout the Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the next 5 days due to the Southwest Monsoon. During the next five days, Telangana, North Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are likely to get isolated to scattered rainfall. On May 13 and 14, coastal and south interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu may get widespread light/moderate rainfall.
