On Monday, Delhi recorded a scorching maximum temperature of 45.2 degrees Celsius, a staggering 6.4 degrees above the seasonal average. The heat index, which measures how hot it feels due to humidity, soared to a brutal 50 degrees Celsius. The IMD forecasts a similar heat index for Tuesday, with a slight dip to the 47–49-degree range on Wednesday.
These extreme conditions pose a serious health threat for people with prolonged exposure to the sun, people who perform extreme activities, senior citizens, and children.
Heatwave Grips the Entire North India:
The heatwave is not limited to Delhi. Several other parts of North India are experiencing moderate to severe heatwave conditions, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and parts of Bihar and Uttarakhand. Even regions of Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Rajasthan are sweltering under the heat.
The IMD reports maximum temperatures ranging between 44 and 46 degrees Celsius across much of North India, exceeding normal levels by 4 to 8 degrees. Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest temperature in the country at a scorching 47.6 degrees Celsius.
Limited Relief Expected Mid-Week:
While the heatwave is expected to persist for the next two days, the IMD predicts some relief starting Wednesday. A western disturbance is anticipated to bring some moisture and cooler temperatures to Punjab and Haryana. Central and East India might see a slight dip in temperatures by Wednesday or Thursday.
Heat Advisories Issued by IMD:
The IMD has issued heatwave warnings and advisories for the next five days. Several regions, including parts of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jharkhand, are expected to experience severe heatwave conditions until June 19th.
Isolated heatwave occurrences are also forecast for Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, northern Rajasthan, and parts of Maharashtra. With such brutal heat waves challenging the entire country, IMD appeals to the citizens to take all the precautions necessary to protect themselves and their loved ones from chronic diseases.
