According to media reports, a farmer from Bijnor district in western Uttar Pradesh has won the State cane competition this year with a sugarcane production of 2,635 quintal per hectare.

For his output in the early plant category, Subhash Chandra, a farmer from Barkaatpur in Bijnor, was awarded Rs.15000 in prize money.

Farmers compete each year to showcase who can produce the highest yield per acre. Farmers from Lakhimpur Kheri, commonly known as the sugar bowl, took second and third place, according to the results.

Commissioner, cane and sugar department, Sanjay Bhoosreddy, said they acquired 125 applications from throughout Uttar Pradesh for the competition, which was divided into four categories: ratoon, early plant, general plant, and drip irrigation.

Healthy Competitive Spirit

He explained that the competition's primary objective is to enhance per-hectare production in sugar mill regions by instilling a healthy competitive spirit among farmers.

Officials stated Rajendri Devi, a woman farmer from Lakhimpur Kheri, came in second with a yield of 2,423 quintal per hectare, while Ashok Kumar, also from the same district, came in third (2,368 quintal per hectare).

The second and third place winners received Rs.10000 and Rs.7500 respectively. The state has appointed officers to oversee the crop cutting of the competition fields.

Farmers from Lakhimpur Kheri, Meerut, Gonda, Bijnor, and Shamli received only consolation awards in the ratoon, general plant, and drip irrigation categories, since the department received lesser than the necessary number of participants and an inadequate yield of competitors.

Sugarcane Production in India:

India is the world's largest sugarcane producer, with an area of 3.93 million hectares and a yield of 167 million tonnes. Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Bihar, Haryana, and Punjab are the states with the greatest cane land, accounting for over half of the country's total. These are the nine states that produce the most sugarcane. U.P. also produces the most sugarcane, followed by Maharashtra.

Tamil Nadu has the highest productivity, with over 100 tons per acre, followed by Karnataka and Maharashtra. Bihar has the lowest sugarcane productivity among the main sugar-producing states.
