During the hot summer in Agra, where temperatures reach 46°C, most farmers struggle to keep their fields from drying out. The use of chemicals has made the soil less fertile, causing water to evaporate quickly and crops to wither. However, Rohtan Singh's farm remains green and healthy, even in the peak of summer. His diversified crops, including mustard, wheat, and green fodder for his Gir cows, flourish without the need for heavy irrigation or expensive chemical inputs.

Singh's innovative approach to natural farming not only ensures his crops thrive but also provides him with a steady income, selling his produce locally at a premium.

Shift from Chemical to Natural Farming

"For years, I watched my land grow weaker under chemical farming," recalls Singh. "The fodder would dry up, and I had no choice but to buy expensive feed for my cows. But ever since I switched to natural farming, my fields remain full of fresh, green fodder, even in the harshest months."

Singh's transformation began five years ago when he joined the Art of Living’s Sri Sri Natural Farming program. Taking a leap of faith, he learned techniques that would restore his land instead of depleting it. By implementing methods such as mulching, cow urine applications, and crop rotation, Singh saw his farm gradually regain its vitality, much like a patient recovering from a prolonged illness.

Starting cautiously, Singh initially dedicated a small portion of his one-acre land to natural farming. The results were astonishing. Pests became less of an issue, the soil grew richer, and his vegetables developed an enhanced taste. Encouraged by these improvements, he expanded these techniques across his entire farm, turning it into a model of resilience and sustainability.

Ensuring Year-Round Fodder Supply

One of Singh’s most remarkable achievements has been maintaining a steady supply of fodder for his Gir cows, even during the scorching summers. Unlike neighbouring farms where chemically treated soil dries and cracks, Singh’s land remains moist and fertile. The secret lies in Jeevamrit, a natural soil enhancer that improves water retention, reducing the need for excessive irrigation while ensuring his cows always have access to fresh, protein-rich fodder.

Beyond soil health, Singh discovered another game-changer—Moringa trees. These trees provide crucial shade, protecting fodder crops from the harsh sun. Additionally, their nutrient-packed leaves serve as an excellent supplement for his cows. “My cows love Moringa leaves, and we even dry them to make natural medicine for joint pain,” Singh shares.

Singh’s farm doesn’t just withstand the heat—it thrives against all odds. The soil is teeming with earthworms, which burrow deep and naturally aerate the land, allowing rainwater to seep in effectively. As a result, Singh experiences no waterlogging, no soil compaction, and significantly lower irrigation costs.

"In chemical farms, the soil gets so hard that water just runs off the surface," Singh explains. "But here, the earth absorbs every drop like a sponge." With just two tilling cycles per season, compared to the five needed by his neighbours, Singh’s farm prospers with minimal effort.

Natural farming hasn’t just revived Singh’s land—it has reshaped his livelihood. With an annual investment of just Rs 20,000 per acre, he produces ample fodder and premium-quality mustard oil, which he sells locally. But what sets him apart is his innovative approach.

"I tell people, don’t just buy from me- adopt me as your farmer," he says. "This way, they get farm-fresh, chemical-free produce, and I get to farm sustainably." Singh directly connects with consumers and ensures both trust and steady demand for his products.

A Movement Rooted in Ancient Wisdom

Singh’s journey is part of a larger revolution- one where farmers are rediscovering ancestral wisdom and blending it with modern sustainability practices. This shift aligns with the vision of Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, a global humanitarian who has long advocated for natural farming.

"What is needed today is to rearm people's faith in natural farming," says Gurudev. "The myth that chemical inputs are essential for good crops is slowly fading, but it still needs more momentum. Farmers who embrace natural farming produce more and live with greater prosperity. This revolution of Rishi Krishi is the key to a healthier planet and a sustainable tomorrow."

Singh’s success story is a testament to the power of nature-based farming. His farm proves that with the right knowledge and techniques, agriculture can thrive even under extreme conditions. As more farmers follow his path, the dream of a greener, more sustainable, and profitable India becomes a step closer to reality.
