Prabhudayal Sen, a dedicated farmer from Khiriamisra village in Jakhora Block, Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, has transformed his agricultural practices and significantly increased his earnings. With years of experience in wheat cultivation, he took a bold step into vegetable farming, particularly tomatoes, and now enjoys a net profit of up to Rs 75,000 per hectare annually from just cultivation of tomatoes. His journey is a testament to the power of knowledge, adaptation, and perseverance in farming.

Initial Struggles of Sticking to Tradition

For many years, Prabhdayal cultivated primarily wheat, relying on traditional methods passed down through generations. Despite having only an 8th-standard education, farming was more than just his means of survival, it was the very essence of who he was. Yet, through his dedication, his earnings remained modest.

From one hectare of land, his wheat yield would bring in approximately Rs 27,000, with a cultivation cost of about Rs 9,000. This left him with a net profit of around Rs 18,000 per hectare, barely enough to uplift his livelihood. This scenario is familiar for many farmers who depend solely on conventional crops, unaware of more lucrative options.

A Turning Point: Learnings from KVK-Lalitpur

In 2009, Prabhdayal’s journey took a transformative turn when he came in contact with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Lalitpur. Through their training programs and hands-on demonstrations, he was introduced to modern vegetable cultivation techniques. Inspired by the knowledge he acquired and realizing the potential of diversification, he decided to expand his farming portfolio beyond wheat and took a bold step into tomato farming on his land.

The results were staggering. With improved agricultural techniques, his productivity skyrocketed. His tomato cultivation brought him gross earnings of approximately Rs. 84,000 per hectare while requiring a total cost of cultivation of around Rs. 15,000 per acre.

Seeing such promising returns, Prabhudayal gradually expanded his vegetable farming, and today, his tomato cultivation alone generates a net profit of up to Rs 75,000 per hectare annually, showcasing the economic potential of vegetable cultivation.

Beyond Tomatoes: Diversification and Growth

Inspired by his success, Prabhudayal didn’t stop at tomatoes. Encouraged by KVK's support, he diversified further, growing brinjal, potatoes, and an abundant variety of other vegetables. Over the years, he expanded his farming land to 11 acres, maximizing his earnings and solidifying his reputation as a progressive farmer.

By adopting modern agricultural techniques such as efficient irrigation, optimized fertilization, and improved crop management, he significantly boosted his overall yield and profits. His income today stands in sharp contrast to his earlier days of wheat farming, proving how adaptation can open doors to greater prosperity.

A Beacon of Inspiration for Other Farmers

Prabhudayal’s success has drawn the attention of farmers across Lalitpur. His remarkable journey has inspired others to consider vegetable farming as a viable and profitable alternative. Many have turned to him for guidance, eager to replicate his achievements. His story is a shining example of how exposure to modern farming techniques can completely transform rural agriculture.

Prabhudayal ’s story exemplifies the power of knowledge and adaptation in farming. By embracing modern agricultural techniques and diversifying his crop production, he transformed his modest wheat farming into a thriving vegetable cultivation enterprise. His journey serves as an inspiration for farmers across India, proving that progress in agriculture begins with learning and the willingness to change.
