This story is about two sisters who did miracles during the lockdown when the whole country was suffering due to Covid 19 Pandemic and were locked inside their homes. Knowing the demand of these flowers is very high in Jharkhand, these girls used their idle time from school to cultivate Gerberas.
Now, the flowers are harvested every 3-4 days and sold in the market for good profits.
The sisters, Preeti & Priyanka turned to Google to learn about Gerbera farming. Once, they found out that soil & climatic conditions in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand are appropriate for growing these flowers, there was no turning back for these girls!
Priyanka Bhagat, said, "When we got the first harvest from our field, we were very happy! Gerbera is a lovely flower that is extensively used for decoration purposes at weddings & parties. This flower is traditionally not grown in Jharkhand and is brought from Bangalore. However, there is a high demand for this flower in the state.”
Preeti & Priyanka took help from their father to obtain the seeds & other inputs from Bangalore. They had sown the seeds over a one-acre area and got a full bloom with in 3 months. They harvest flowers every 3-4 days and with each harvest, they earn 50-60 thousand rupees by selling it in the market. They are now earning lakhs of rupees for the entire family.
Both sisters are overjoyed that they were able to earn so much from flower farming. At the same time, they have become an inspiration for others. Seeing the success of these girls, their neighbors are motivated to try their hands in Farming.
"We live in Kalpathar hamlet, and this year for the first time we have cultivated Gerbera flowers," Preeti Bhagat said. It's a lovely flower, and there's a lot of demand for it in the marketplace.
