Embracing Change: Srikanth's Transition to Modern Farming
Srikanth recalls how he started supporting his family at a very young age, sacrificing his studies for three years. At that time, he was not able to generate enough income to free his family from debt. However, a glimmer of hope soon emerged for him. In 1995, he got an opportunity to visit Bangalore where he was exposed to floriculture farming, arranged by the MP of his native village. This opened his horizons towards high-tech agricultural practices after which he embraced the transition from traditional agriculture to modern technology.
Harnessing Modern Technology for Agricultural Prosperity
At present, several technological advancements are implemented on his farm. He says, "The farm has poly houses, drip and sprinkler irrigation systems, and solar panels. These modern technologies have played a pivotal role in enhancing the efficiency and productivity of my farming operations."
Remembering his humble beginnings, Srikanth shares, "I was not aware of these technologies from day one. It all became possible only when I was offered to work at the floriculture farm in Bangalore. Initially, I was anxious." But tough times did not deter Srikanth’s spirit. He worked tirelessly for 18 hours a day for a payment of Rs. 1000. Faced with the dilemma of providing for his family with such a modest income, he made the bold decision to venture into flower trading in 1997.
Overcoming Challenges for Growth and Innovation
With an initial investment of only Rs.18,000, Srikanth embarked on his journey in flower trading, witnessing a remarkable turnover of 5 lakhs in the first year alone. Over time, his perseverance and dedication propelled him to achieve a turnover of 50 crores, illustrating the remarkable success born from humble beginnings.
Srikanth expresses, "Coming from an agricultural family background, I always aspired to cultivate flowers on my land." Finally, in 2010, the earnings from trading were invested in acquiring land, allowing him to fulfill his dream of growing flowers. With determination and hard work, he expanded his cultivation from 10 acres to 50 acres.
Inspiring Others: Message to Fellow Farmers
Srikanth emphasizes the role of passion and dedication in farming. He says, "One must have a genuine interest in doing what they are doing, and not solely focus on monetary gains. Enjoy the work of farming and put in your utmost effort," he advises. Further, he urges farmers to seek knowledge from experts. "Give your best with patience," he concludes, reflecting on the significance of perseverance in agriculture.
