Meet Laxmikanth Hibare: Earning Lakhs from Turmeric on His 3.5 Acres of Natural Farmland

Laxmikant Hibare of Kalaburagi turned barren land into a thriving turmeric farm, earning lakhs by cultivating and marketing turmeric products innovatively.

Laxmikant Hibare, a 42-year-old farmer from Hagaraga village in Kalaburagi district of Karnataka, transformed barren land into lush green fields 12 years ago. Today, he earns lakhs of money by cultivating turmeric on 3.5 acres of natural farmland as a mixed crop. With guidance from scientists at Krushi Vigyan Kendra, Hibare embarked on his journey by purchasing 600 kg of Salem breed turmeric seedlings for Rs 29,000. Using organic fertilizers and expert techniques, he nurtured the soil's fertility, planting the saplings meticulously (8 feet from line to line and 1.5 feet from seed to seed) in May 2021. Hibare's dedication paid off as he received Rs 30 per kilogram for his high-quality seedlings.

Laxmikant Hibare's Turmeric Success Story: Efficient Cultivation & Innovative Processing

He waters his crops every week using drip irrigation, and he protects them from diseases by applying neem oil and using Trichoderma. Each turmeric plant grows vigorously, benefiting from essential micronutrients. After 10 months, Laxmikant harvested his first crop, yielding an impressive 1.5 tonnes. Now, his second crop is just a month old.

His turmeric crop tested in the laboratory of the Government of India and confirmed that the main ingredient of curcumin is 3.66%, because the turmeric crop grown under the auspices of sandalwood. This makes his turmeric ideal for combating diseases like cancer. After sorting and cleaning the turmeric pieces, Laxmikant manufactures turmeric powder under the brand name ‘Hibare’ in Kalaburagi, selling it at Rs. 30 per kilogram.

From Turmeric Entrepreneurship to Agro-Forestry Excellence:

Laxmikant Hibare has arranged wholesale sales of his turmeric powder through WhatsApp in major cities. With rates set at Rs 100 for 250 grams, Rs 200 for 500 grams, and Rs 400 for one kilogram, he has already manufactured 700 kilograms, expecting an income of Rs 2 lakh. His success has earned praise from agriculture officials and scientists.

In addition to his farming ventures, Laxmikant has been practicing agro-forestry for 12 years, cultivating a diverse range of around 3875 plants and trees on his land. He has also received recognition, including the Krushi Pandit Award and honors from banks, newspapers, forums, and organizations.

Laxmikant highlights the ancient uses and health benefits of turmeric, highlighting its significance in cosmetics, medicines, religious practices, and immune-boosting properties against diseases like cancer. He believes in popularizing turmeric cultivation for its numerous benefits.

Laxmikanth Hibare has been nominated for a second term as a Member of the Scientific Advisory Committee for UAS Raichur KVK Kalaburagi. Additionally, he has been honored with two National Awards.
