Modern Farming: Embracing Integrated Systems

Ashwini Singh Chauhan’s journey to success is rooted in his early decision to pursue agriculture as a profession after completing his higher education at Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad University, Baroda. Owning approximately 100 acres of land, Chauhan has been practicing what is known as the Integrated Farming System (IFS) Model. This model is a comprehensive approach to agriculture that combines various farming-related activities within a single location. Chauhan has been able to maximize his farm's productivity and profitability by integrating crop cultivation, horticulture, and animal husbandry.

The Integrated Farming System Model is designed to optimize the use of resources while ensuring environmental sustainability. For Chauhan, this model has meant growing a variety of crops, such as wheat, chickpeas, potatoes, onions, and soybeans, alongside horticultural crops like papaya, lemon, and banana. Additionally, he cultivates vegetables such as watermelon, muskmelon, and cucumber, which further diversify his income streams. The diversity of his farm operations not only provides financial stability but also reduces the risks associated with relying on a single crop.

Collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra:

Chauhan attributes a significant part of his success to the guidance and support he received from Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), an agricultural science center established by the Government of India to assist farmers. After connecting with the KVK in his region, Chauhan was introduced to agricultural scientists who recognized his eagerness to innovate. They provided him with high-quality seeds and regular on-site guidance, helping him implement modern farming techniques that have significantly enhanced his productivity.

One of the critical modern technique Chauhan adopted with the help of KVK was drip irrigation technology. By installing a system that irrigates his entire farm from a single location, Chauhan has been able to conserve water, a crucial resource in farming. The drip irrigation system operates during the 10-hour electricity supply window, ensuring that water is delivered directly to the plant roots with minimal waste. Moreover, Chauhan received a government subsidy of 62-75% to install this system, highlighting the importance of leveraging available resources and incentives to improve farm efficiency.

Financial Achievements

Ashwini Singh Chauhan’s innovative farming practices have yielded remarkable financial results. The annual cost per acre for his farming operations ranges between 40,000 and 50,000 rupees, while his earnings per acre stand at approximately 80,000 to 1 lakh rupees. With this level of productivity, Chauhan has achieved an annual turnover exceeding 50 lakh rupees. His financial success serves as a powerful example for other farmers who aspire to transition from traditional methods to more modern and profitable farming practices.

Malwa Green Platform: Empowering Fellow Farmers

Beyond his personal success, Chauhan is deeply committed to empowering fellow farmers. He is associated with the Malwa Green Platform, an initiative that works towards providing farmers with access to seeds, fertilizers, and essential information on new farming techniques. This platform addresses one of the most significant challenges farmers face: marketing their produce. By documenting his farming practices, including the costs and benefits of various crops, Chauhan has created a valuable resource for other farmers. His efforts have helped many farmers in his region transition to more sustainable and profitable farming practices.

Recognition and Awards

Chauhan’s contributions to agriculture have been widely recognized, earning him numerous awards over the years. Among these awards are the Dhanuka Farmer of the Year, the Jagjivan Ram Innovative Farmer National Award 2018, the IARI Farmer Fellowship 2022/23, and the Best Farmer award for Organic Farming and Water Management presented by the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. These awards reflect his innovative approach to farming, his commitment to organic practices, and his leadership in promoting sustainable agriculture.

Advocating Crop Diversification and Sustainable Practices

Chauhan has consistently advocated for crop diversification, a strategy that mitigates the risks of crop failure by ensuring that if one crop suffers losses, another can compensate. He also highlights the importance of soil testing and nutrient management, advising farmers to test their soil annually and apply only the necessary nutrients. Furthermore, Chauhan encourages farmers to engage in animal husbandry and explore opportunities to create their own products for the market, thereby reducing costs and enhancing profitability.

Ashwini Singh Chauhan’s journey from traditional farming to modern agriculture shows the powerful impact of innovative techniques. By using the Integrated Farming System Model, working with agricultural experts, and taking advantage of government support, Chauhan has turned his farm into a thriving business. His success story inspires farmers across India to adopt modern, sustainable, and profitable farming practices, helping drive the country’s agricultural growth.
