Rahul Govind, a native of Kerala’s Kannur district, began his professional life in a very different environment, as a Junior Officer in the Merchant Navy in 2010. Despite his degree in English Literature and a stable maritime career, Rahul’s heart remained anchored in agriculture. This lifelong fascination was instilled early on by his father, Govindam Nambiar, a respected and skilled farmer in their locality who taught him the fundamentals of farming. Years of assisting his father laid a strong foundation, but it was mushroom farming that would ultimately capture his curiosity and reshape his future.

A family situation brought him back to his hometown for an extended period, and it was during this time that the seed of his mushroom farming journey was planted. Observing his mother, who used to rear cattle before selling them due to family responsibilities, Rahul realized that both of them now had time and interest to explore something new.

He shared his idea of trying out mushroom farming, an area that had intrigued him for some time. His mother, encouraging and enterprising, agreed. Together, they enrolled in a training session conducted by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kannur, where they learned the scientific methods of mushroom cultivation.

A Modest Start, A Big Leap

The duo started their journey with just 100 mushroom beds in a 50 sq. ft. storeroom, an unassuming beginning that would later snowball into a full-fledged enterprise. This experiment became a turning point in Rahul’s life. Engaged, fascinated, and motivated, he discovered not only a viable career path but also a passion that offered creative and intellectual satisfaction. By 2016, he made the courageous decision to resign from his stable job in the Merchant Navy and fully dedicate himself to agriculture, with a special focus on mushroom cultivation. Today, he cultivates a range of mushroom varieties, including oyster, milky, and rare types like turkey tail and lion’s mane.

Partnering with ARYA

Around the same time, Rahul came across the ARYA project (Attracting and Retaining Youth in Agriculture), an initiative by KVK aimed at encouraging young people below 35 to pursue agriculture. He joined the project and benefited immensely from it. ARYA provided training, exposure, and networking opportunities that broadened his understanding of mushroom farming, including value addition and business development. This knowledge further solidified Rahul’s decision to build a future in farming.

Birth of Monsoon Mushrooms

In 2018, Rahul launched his official farming venture, Monsoon Mushrooms. The name reflected Kerala’s climate and Rahul’s belief in growing with nature. What started from a shed soon expanded into a thriving agribusiness. Today, Monsoon Mushrooms operates eight mushroom farms, six in various districts across Kerala and two more in Aralam, run in collaboration with the state government.

The company is one of the top mushroom producers in the state and is known not only for fresh mushrooms but also for comprehensive farming solutions like spawn production, substrate preparation, farm design consultancy, and training.

Rahul’s company now generates an impressive turnover of over Rs 2 crore annually. But what sets his venture apart is not just the scale, it’s the innovation.

Introducing Mush Pellet: A Game-Changing Substrate

In July 2023, Monsoon Mushrooms launched one of its most revolutionary products, Mush Pellet, an alternative mushroom-growing medium that challenges traditional practices. This innovation was spearheaded by Rahul’s friend cum business advisor, Adam Shamsudeen.

Conventional mushroom farming relies on substrates like straw, coir, and sugarcane husk, which pose issues of disinfection, labor, and quality inconsistency. Mush Pellet, on the other hand, is made from disinfected rubber sawdust mixed with essential nutrients in a scientifically determined ratio. The result is a pellet-like medium that resembles cattle feed. It requires minimal preparation, just one and a half liters of boiling water per kilo, and is ready for inoculation after a brief heating period.

This innovation not only reduces contamination risk but also makes mushroom farming more accessible to beginners and small-scale farmers. Rahul and his team have been instrumental in introducing Mush Pellet to farming communities across Kerala, receiving positive feedback for its simplicity and effectiveness.

Cracking the Code of Market Access

Like many farmers, Rahul initially faced difficulties in finding a market for his produce. In the early days, he sold mushrooms directly to local vegetable vendors. However, the COVID-19 pandemic changed the dynamics. With traditional market routes disrupted, Rahul adopted direct marketing strategies. He began supplying mushrooms to municipal offices, police stations, and check posts, places with regular demand and visibility.

This move proved to be a strategic breakthrough. As his brand grew, so did his customer base. Today, Monsoon Mushrooms supplies to supermarkets, specialty organic stores, and institutional buyers. Rahul believes this hands-on marketing approach helped him understand consumer behavior and shaped his future strategies.

Adding Value: Mushroom Soup to Biryani

Rahul’s next big leap came in value addition. Recognizing the rising demand for ready-to-cook and healthy food products, he ventured into processing mushrooms into shelf-stable, delicious formats. His first product, Mushroom Soup, was launched at the Vaiga Agricultural Expo in 2020 by former Agriculture Minister V.S. Sunilkumar. Their Mushroom Pickle is the best-selling item, known for its exceptional taste and quality. It features in their premium product range while remaining affordably priced, making it a popular choice among customers.

The product’s success prompted Rahul to develop a range of mushroom-based items, now totaling around ten, including a unique product: retort-packed mushroom biryani, which can be stored for up to 8 months without preservatives. These are manufactured in collaboration with Eatery Malabaricus, a food tech company known for its work with cashew value-added products. These products now reach government departments, official ministries, and consumer markets across the region. Starting from a small space, Monsoon Mushroom have grown to the point of proudly building a mushroom farm for the state’s Agriculture Minister. With over 50 farms established across Kerala, now expanding to other states.

Digital Influence and Farmer Education

During the pandemic, Rahul used the downtime to launch a YouTube channel focused on mushroom farming techniques, innovations, and tips. His transparent, easy-to-understand content soon found an audience, and the channel has now crossed 16,000 subscribers. Many aspiring farmers have benefited from his videos, gaining confidence to launch their own ventures.

In addition to digital outreach, Rahul regularly conducts training workshops across Kerala, both independently and in collaboration with agricultural bodies. He is a Master Trainer at KVK Kannur and provides training for the National Rubber Board, NSS, Scouts and Guides, the Agriculture Department, Agricultural Colleges, and various organizations throughout Kerala.

On April 1, 2025, he took another major step by inaugurating the Mushroom Exploration & Research Centre (MERC), aimed at advancing research, innovation, and training in mushroom cultivation. The center was inaugurated by Kerala’s Agriculture Minister, Shri P. Prasad.

A Family-Led Success Story

Rahul attributes his success to the unwavering support of his family and close friends. His wife, Anusree, has been a constant pillar of strength, while his friends Sreekanth and Adam Shamsudeen have played crucial roles in the growth of Monsoon Mushroom. Adam Shamsudeen, the founder of Grow the Funguy, offered invaluable assistance in helping Rahul establish his venture. Sreekanth, a close friend, has also partnered with Rahul in Monsoon Mushroom, contributing significantly to its success. Rahul firmly believes that the emotional and operational backing from his loved ones has been the foundation of his entrepreneurial journey.

To budding agripreneurs, Rahul shares a piece of advice that he lives by: “Experience is the best teacher. Start small, learn the challenges and opportunities, and then grow.”
