Gaurav Sabharwal, a determined young entrepreneur from Solan, Himachal Pradesh has made a remarkable impact in the field of agriculture. Despite facing immense challenges, including the sudden loss of his father, which plunged his family into economic uncertainty, Gaurav found the resilience to redefine his future. Once involved in the shoe business, he was forced to decide to continue grappling with financial instability or take a bold leap toward a new venture. It was during this pivotal moment of despair that Gaurav discovered a revolutionary farming technique—aeroponics—which would not only transform his life but also bring innovation to agriculture.
His search for sustainable solutions led him to explore the indoor cultivation of saffron, the world’s most expensive spice. With aeroponics offering the possibility of growing saffron in limited spaces, Gaurav took a leap of faith. He ventured into the world of indoor saffron farming, driven by the immense potential of this breakthrough method.

A Bold Experiment with Aeroponics
Gaurav began experimenting with saffron farming in a small indoor setup in 2022. In traditional farming, crops rely on soil whereas aeroponics involves growing plants in the air with suspended roots and misting them with nutrient water. This revolutionary technique allowed him to grow saffron in a controlled environment. He need not be concerned with soil quality or seasonal variations.
Gaurav expanded his setup to 300 square feet in 2023 satisfied with the promising results. He bought quality Kashmiri saffron bulbs to achieve maximum output. The, setting up of an aeroponic farm was not cheap. The initial investment amounted to around Rs 7-8 lakhs. He borrowed by availing a loan under the Pradhan Mantri Employment Generation Program (PMEGP). He was certain that this technology would be an investment worth making in the long run although there was a risk of money.
Mastering the Art of Indoor Saffron Cultivation
Saffron is a delicate crop that needs to be cultivated under controlled humidity and temperature conditions. The natural climate in Kashmir is favorable for saffron cultivation. Gaurav needed to create Kashmir-like conditions artificially within his room. He installed temperature control units to maintain the room temperature between 8 and 23 degrees Celsius. He simulated the natural climate favorable for saffron cultivation in August-November.
The first-year production was modest, he was certain that he needed to be patient to achieve success. Saffron bulbs become more productive with age. He hoped to get back his entire investment within three or four years. In the second year, he was already seeing the fruits of his labor. His saffron was of high quality and buyers were ready to pay a good price for it.

A Highly Profitable Business Model
The demand for saffron in India is huge but 94% of it needs to be imported from Iran. The production in the country is not sufficient as per the demand. This market gap was a golden opportunity for Gaurav. He tapped the retail market, selling it at Rs 5 lakh per kg Instead of selling his saffron in bulk at Rs 2.5 lakh per kg like most other farmers. This served to substantially boost his profits which allowed him to reinvest in his business and think of expansion.
Local farmers and agricultural experts soon took cues from his success. Many were amazed that he had managed to convert a small indoor space into a successful saffron farm. Several farmers in Solan began to explore similar techniques encouraged by his success. He is proving that innovation had the potential to revolutionize Indian agriculture.
Scaling Up for the Future
Gaurav is not stopping at 300 square feet only. His future dream is to scale up his saffron farm to 1,000 square feet. He also hopes to train and mentor other farmers who want to grow saffron indoors. His one of biggest dreams is to develop a model where farmers can grow their own saffron bulbs. It will reduce the high costs associated with procuring them from Kashmir.
He believes that in 5-6 years, The farmers who follow this method can not only grow saffron profitably but also earn extra money by selling saffron bulbs to others. His dream for the distant future is to make India saffron-independent. This will reduce the country's dependence on imports and increase the earnings of small farmers.
