Sukhjeet Singh, an organic farmer from Sirsa, Haryana, has transformed 72 acres into a Rs. 60 lakh organic agribusiness. He sells over 35 organic products like atta, dal, mustard oil, and vegetables through his Farmer Producer Company, Sirsa Natural Farms, directly to urban consumers and online platforms.

Sukhjeet Singh, a visionary farmer from Haryana’s Sirsa district, was born into a modest farming family where he witnessed his parents laboring day and night to grow crops like wheat, mustard, cotton, and bajra using traditional methods. Despite their relentless efforts, the financial returns were limited. After completing his intermediate education, Sukhjeet had the option to pursue a different career path, but he chose to stay rooted in agriculture.

Driven by a desire to demonstrate that farming can be both profitable and dignified when approached innovatively, he set out to transform his family’s land into a flourishing organic agribusiness.

Changing to Organic Farming: A Turning Point

Sukhjeet started learning organic farming in 2015 after undergoing training sessions of Krishi Vigyan Kendra and participating in different agricultural fairs. Observing the destruction caused by chemicals to the soil and family health, he quit the use of synthetic inputs. He is farming on his 72 acre of land

The early days were not easy, with lower yields and derision from friends. But Sukhjeet held on and began to make his own vermicompost, jeevamrut, and organic pesticides from locally available inputs. Gradually, soil health improved, production quality enhanced, and clients started to enjoy the rich flavor and aroma of his grains and oils.

Integrating Livestock for Self-Reliant Farming

Sukhjeet feels that integrated farming is the pillar of sustainability. On his farm, he keeps two cows and two buffaloes. The milk is utilized primarily for domestic use, but sometimes in excess he sells it in the village.

Significantly, he employs cow urine and dung to make quality organic manure and liquid bio-fertilizers such as jeevamrut and ghana jeevamrut. This has significantly brought down his costs and increased soil fertility. He says. "Animals are not just part of our farm, they are part of our family and natural farming cycle."

From Organic Farmer to Agripreneur

By 2018, Sukhjeet went a step further and registered his own Farmer Producer Company (FPO)—Acrefarm Farmer Producer company. Using this FPO, he began processing, packing, and branding organic commodities such as atta, dal, mustard oil, desi ghee, and others under the brand Sirsa Natural.

As demand rose from health-aware consumers, he started selling his vegetables directly to end-users in Delhi, Chandigarh, Punjab, and nearby urban areas. He also used internet platforms and social media to connect with consumers seeking natural, chemical-free produce.

Now, his business sells more than 35 organic items and has a turnover of 50–60 lakh per year. He also provided employment for 12 rural youth and helped the livelihoods of more than 600 farmers from surrounding villages indirectly, who have started using organic methods after witnessing his success.

Recognition and Awards

Sukhjeet Singh's efforts have been rewarded with several awards. He has been awarded for his efforts in potato seed production. “The recognition is encouraging, but the true reward is when a fellow farmer says, ‘Because of you, I’ve started organic farming,’” he says with pride.

Role in GFBN and Future Vision

Sukhjeet recently joined the Global Farmer Business Network (GFBN), a national initiative by Krishi Jagran that supports sustainable and successful agripreneurs. As a part of GFBN, Sukhjeet now imparts his learnings and real-world experiences to other farmers, mentoring them on building lucrative organic models without external dependence.

His future objectives are to create a solar-powered processing unit, construct a cold storage facility for perishables, and increase environmentally friendly packaging solutions. He is also going to start a separate training center for young and budding organic farmers.

A Farmer First, Always

Even though he has been successful, Sukhjeet still identifies as a farmer. He spends a few hours in his fields each day, interacts with local farmer groups, and thinks that the future of Indian agriculture is in nature-based agriculture, community learning, and direct market access.

"Agriculture has provided everything: identity, earnings, and peace of mind. If we treat the land with respect, the land will return the respect to us," he says. His is not merely a tale of success but about how he restored faith in agriculture, equipped rural youth, and proved that a farmer can also be an entrepreneur.
