From Hardship to Harvest: Humble Beginnings of a Visionary Farmer
Born into a financially struggling family, Dilip Kumar Singh had to drop out of school after Intermediate studies due to economic difficulties. In 1993, seeking a way to earn a living, he started selling vegetables, but soon realized that merely trading them wouldn’t suffice. With no land of his own, he leased 2 acres in Mishirpur village and began vegetable farming.
His early efforts in cultivation showed promise, encouraging him to expand his farming operations. Over time, he leased 60 acres of land across villages like Kuraich, Dyalpur, Lalganj, Neema, Kota, Suma, and Jaynagar, growing a variety of crops and steadily increasing his earnings.
Expanding from 2 to 60 Acres Across Multiple Villages
Recognizing the potential in vegetable farming, Dilip Kumar Singh gradually expanded his farming land, increasing from two acres to 60 acres. His cultivation spread across multiple villages, including Kuraich, Dyalpur, Lalganj, Neema, Kota, Suma, and Jaynagar, near his hometown in Sasaram block. With dedication and efficient farming techniques, his vegetable production improved significantly, leading to better earnings.
In 2004, Dilip Kumar Singh met experts from the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Rohtas, Bikramganj, who introduced him to scientific farming techniques. Under their guidance, he improved his cultivation methods, growing tomatoes, okra, cauliflower, brinjal, potatoes, onions, chilies, bottle gourd, bitter gourd, capsicum, and baby corn, among other crops.
Embracing Scientific Farming for Higher Yields
To further refine his farming skills, he pursued training at Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (IIVR), Varanasi, and Department of Horticulture, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi. This exposure introduced him to innovative farming practices, particularly in organic vegetable production.
With continuous guidance from KVK, Rohtas, BAU Sabour, Bhagalpur, and other agricultural institutions, Dilip Singh expanded his farm to 60 acres, growing both organic and non-organic vegetables. His entrepreneurial mindset transformed his venture into a highly profitable business, earning between Rs 20-25 lakh annually.
