However, Edward Mendes has turned this challenge into a success. Techie Turned Farmer: Embracing the Roots
Edward Mendes belongs to Raicho Ambo (Manora) Raia, Goa. He began his career as a computer engineer, working in Germany, from where he shifted to Italy and joined a festival shipping company, where he was controlling the whole computer network of the company. Despite his success in the tech field, he had to leave his job and return to Goa due to health issues. In Goa, he observed that many exotic vegetables were being imported into the region and were not cultivated within the state. This observation sparked a new passion in him—growing these vegetables locally using modern farming techniques.
In 2016, he started writing a book on the cultivation of exotic crops in Goa. However, due to a lack of support from farmers and cooperatives, he couldn’t proceed. Finally, in 2017, Edward started cultivating crops that were not typically grown in Goa, by using hydroponics and aeroponics (methods that allow plants to grow without soil). He used to collect saplings of exotic crops whenever he traveled to different places around the world, bringing them back to grow in his own backyard.
"Since childhood, as I was living with my grandparent who were involved in agriculture, I was aware of basic agricultural techniques. At first, it was just my passion, but with time and circumstances, I made it my profession," Edward reflects on his transition from technology to agriculture. Edward's agricultural roots, combined with a newfound passion, led him to transform his career and focus on farming.
Apple Adventure: Beating the Weather
In 2020, Edward decided to take on the challenge of growing apples, inspired by a meeting with Hariman Sharma in Himachal Pradesh. Hariman is a farmer known for successfully growing apples in warmer regions. Edward obtained 200 tissue culture apple saplings from Hariman and returned to Goa. However, the plantation was not easy; he faced significant challenges, primarily due to Goa’s heavy rainfall and high humidity, which are not ideal for apple cultivation.
Edward used several innovative strategies to address these challenges. He covered the apple trees with plastic to protect them from the rain and carefully pruned the trees to help them grow better. Despite these efforts, the initial years were tough. "In the first year, the flowers and roots weren't strong enough, so I discarded them. In the third year, I lost 35 plants, but now over 40 plants are fruiting," Edward shares with pride.
Staying Organic: A Natural Way to Grow
One of Edward’s core principles is his commitment to organic farming. "I never used inorganic chemicals. I make organic fertilizers and pesticides by myself," Edward explains. He uses natural materials like neem leaves, kitchen waste, and vermicomposting to make these products. This approach not only ensures that his produce is healthy but also supports environmental sustainability.
Edward’s farming method is both effective and eco-friendly. By making his own fertilizers and pesticides, he can control the quality of his farming inputs and maintain a healthier environment for his plants.
Beyond Apples: Exploring New Crops
Edward’s success with apples is just one part of his broader agricultural journey. He has expanded his farming efforts to include a variety of other crops. He grows turmeric, seven varieties of sweet potatoes, and is exploring the cultivation of berries and potatoes using aeroponics. His farming approach is integrated, including aqua farming and poultry, which allows him to use resources efficiently and reduce waste.
Edward’s creativity in farming doesn’t stop with traditional crops. He has also ventured into processing. He grows aloe vera and has set up a processing unit for it. Additionally, he cultivates tapioca, which he uses in his bakery. This diversification not only maximizes the use of his resources but also provides additional income streams.
Helping Future Farmers: Sharing Knowledge
Edward is passionate about sharing his knowledge and helping the next generation of farmers. He provides training to young farmers, encouraging them to embrace innovative techniques and explore new crops. Edward believes that by expanding their horizons and adopting modern farming methods, farmers can improve their productivity and income.
"Farmers shouldn't stick to old crops. Any crop is possible if you're willing to take risks," Edward advises. He emphasizes that the success of growing unconventional crops is possible with the right approach and mindset. Edward’s willingness to share his experiences and insights helps others in the farming community learn and grow.

Edward’s journey is far from over. He plans to set up a tissue culture unit, which will allow him to grow even more diverse crops. His continued exploration of agricultural innovations reflects his commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in farming.
