With the advent of the acceptance of the scientific consensus on Global warming by the world leaders in the latest COP26 and the recent pledges taken to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of countries in an effort to limit the rise of temperature of the earth to 1.5 degree Celsius in the coming days has been a great success.
However, the absence of participation of Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia and Xi Jinping, the President of China during the summit has actually rubbed a few people the wrong way.
The most important amongst them was Barrack Obama, Ex- President of the United States of America who criticized the two world leaders on media for playing dirty politics to avoid acting on climate change.
“It was particularly discouraging to see the leaders of two of the world's largest emitters, China and Russia, declined to even attend the proceedings,” said Obama in Glasgow. He continued on by saying, “Their national COI plans so far reflect what appears to be a dangerous lack of urgency and willingness to maintain the status quo on the part of those governments, and that's a shame”.
Obama also criticised lawmakers at home to be more aware of the threat that climate change poses to human civilization as a whole by stating, “Nature, physics, science, do not care about party affiliation” in an address to the citizens of the united states. This is actually something that we all as humans should keep in mind when it comes to climate change and global warming.
In reply to the criticism by many other dignitaries’ Foreign Minister of the People's Republic of China, Wang Yi had replied saying that China will reply with action and not just words and that they have a holistic action plan written down for the upcoming years.
Although many nations have actually taken a lot of pledges in this 26th Conference of Parties only time will tell if they can actually stay true on their promises.
