WFP's Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau Commends India’s Progress in Food Security in Meeting with Agriculture Secretary

WFP Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau, during a meeting with Agriculture Secretary Dr. Devesh Chaturvedi in New Delhi, lauded India’s progress in food security and pledged deeper collaboration. Discussions focused on India's agricultural innovations and its role in advancing global food and nutrition security.

Carl Skau, Deputy Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of the World Food Programme (WFP), met today with Dr. Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary of the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare (DA&FW), at Krishi Bhavan in New Delhi. The meeting centered on WFP’s collaborative initiatives and developments spanning national, regional, and global levels.

India-WFP Ties Strengthened; Focus on Food Security and Innovation

Dr. Chaturvedi highlighted the enduring partnership between the Government of India and the WFP and appreciated the organization’s close coordination with various governments. He also elaborated on the Prime Minister’s vision of positioning India as a global food basket and achieving self-reliance in food and nutrition security.

Emphasizing the significance of South–South cooperation in realising the goals of a developed India or Viksit Bharat, the Secretary outlined key advancements in the agricultural sector. These included progress in crop insurance, adoption of digital agriculture practices, development of traceability systems, and the promotion of bio-fortified crop varieties developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), aimed at enhancing food and nutritional security.

Commending India’s strides in food security, Skau noted that the global food landscape continues to face significant challenges due to escalating conflicts and climate change. He acknowledged India's role as a critical contributor to global solutions and praised the country's experience in building resilient and inclusive food systems.

Skau emphasized that India's social protection frameworks, nutrition fortification initiatives, climate-resilient agricultural practices, and efforts towards women's economic empowerment offer valuable models for other nations. He highlighted the importance of sharing these best practices and innovations to support global food security through knowledge and technology exchange.

Reaffirming WFP’s commitment, Skau expressed readiness to deepen collaboration with India in tackling food insecurity across the globe. The meeting was attended by officials from the Department of Food and Public Distribution, Ministry of External Affairs, NRM Division of DA&FW, NITI Aayog, and the Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO).
