Krishi Jagran organised a webinar on "Understanding and Management of Inland Fish Farming" on the occasion of World Fisheries Day on 21 November 2021, 11 am onwards. Krishi Jagran has always been actively working to make farmers aware of the latest trends in Agriculture and various Allied Services and this webinar was specially organized to help farmers encourage to take up integrated farming that will help to increase their income.
Fish production in India has witnessed tremendous growth by showcasing a production increase from 0.75 million MT during 1950-51 to the current production of 14.1 million MT. World Fisheries Day is very important for trade nowadays as this industry is facing a lack of proper guidelines in investment matters.
Seafood and fishes are the traditional food for many people across the globe. Especially the people dwelling on the coastline regions and closer to the sea consume it as one of their staple foods. So, this day sets future goals and milestones of the trade.
Realizing the importance of this day, we organized an exclusive webinar on “Understanding and Management of Inland Fish Farming” which was attended by Farmers, Scientists, and Students across the states.
The whole webinar was moderated by M C Dominic, Founder & Editor-in-Chief, Krishi Jagran & Agriculture World. In his address, he focused on how fisheries is one of the very important agricultural allied activity and it has the potential to increase the farmer's income.
There were various panelist from all across India including farmers, scientists, and students.
The panel discussion started with Sudheer Rathore, a progressive farmer from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He talked in length about his journey as a fish farmer. He said "I started a pond in my farm with the primary purpose of rainwater harvesting. Then gradually, I thought to why not make the most of this pond and started fish farming. I rear various species of fishes, like Rohu, Naini among others. I use the water from this pond for irrigation, which is rich in urea due to the waste generated by fishes. This has helped to cut off the fertilizer requirement in my farm to a great extent.
Dr. Partha Pratim Biswas, Professor, Cornell University of Veterinary Medicine, Kolkata, West Bengal. He has written various research papers and in the webinar, he talked about the Impact of Pandemic on Fisheries industry and the vaccines available for viral fish diseases.
Suman Kumar Sahu, Fishery Extension Officer, Haldia Development Block, Department of Fisheries, Govt. of West Bengal was one of the other panelist. He focused on diversified Aquaculture technique and the importance of preserving the endangered fish species of India that are on the verge of extinction. This will not only help to help the ecosystem, but also help the farmer, make huge profit from selling such rare species.
Jaishankar, Consultant for Biofloc Fish Farming from Kerala explained what Biofloc fish farming is and how there was a huge boom in this industry as it was new technology and the govt was providing subsidies to set up these units. But now the demand for such fishes has reduced to a great extent. The prices of Tilapia fish has also reduced significantly. He also discussed the problems of fish farmers.
