Weather Warning! IMD Issues Alert for 5 States as ‘Cyclone Tauktae’ set to intensify, NDRF deploys 53 teams

Weather in India: In its latest bulletin news, the IMD said that Cyclone Tauktae, once it is formed, is probably going to intensify into a "very severe cyclonic storm" on May 17 with a wind speed of 150 to 160 mph.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for the coastal regions of Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Maharashtra as Cyclone Taukate is expected to make a landfall between 17 May 18 may The depression formed over Lakshadweep in the Arabian Sea would turn into a cyclonic storm and reach near the Gujarat coast on the morning of May 18, officials said on Friday.

This cyclonic activity would bring thunderstorm and rain in the coastal belt between May 16 and 18, with some of the places in the region receiving heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on Monday and Tuesday, they said. 

In light of this forecast, local administration were already instructed to alert the fishermen and bring them back to coast if they are in the sea, those who are on the coast are barred from venturing into the sea as a precautionary measure till the condition improves, she said. 

As far as Tamil Nadu is concerned, the western and southern parts of the state bordering Kerala have been put on high alert. The NDRF teams are in place and they are being sent to Coimbatore to avoid the possible flood kind of situation if arises. As per reports, in the past 24 hours, Kanyakumari has witnessed heavy rainfall and the sea is extremely rough.
