The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rain and snowfall across North India as Western Disturbances approach, while a cyclonic circulation in the Northeast and an easterly wave in the South will bring rain and thunderstorms. Here’s a detailed forecast to keep you prepared.

Weather Systems at Play

1. Western Disturbance to Bring Rain and Snowfall

A Western Disturbance is currently affecting West Afghanistan, with two fresh systems expected to impact Northwest India between February 1 and 4, 2025. Under its influence:

  • Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad: Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall/snowfall between January 30 and February 4.

  • Himachal Pradesh: Isolated to scattered rainfall/snowfall from January 30 to February 4.

  • Uttarakhand: Isolated to scattered rainfall/snowfall on January 30 and February 1.

  • Punjab, Haryana, and West Uttar Pradesh: Light to moderate rainfall from January 31 to February 4.

  • East Rajasthan and Vidarbha: Light rainfall between February 2 and 4.

  • Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh: Light rainfall on February 3 and 4.

2. Cyclonic Circulation Over Assam to Bring Heavy Rainfall

A cyclonic circulation is currently positioned over Northeast Assam at lower tropospheric levels. This will lead to:

  • Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya: Light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning from January 30 to 31.

  • Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim: Isolated light to moderate rainfall between January 30 and 31.

  • Arunachal Pradesh: Heavy rainfall/snowfall expected on January 30.

3. Easterly Wave to Impact Southern States

The presence of an easterly wave will bring:

  • Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Kerala & Mahe: Light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning from January 30 to February 1.

  • Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal: Isolated heavy rainfall on January 30 and 31.

  • Kerala & Mahe: Isolated heavy rainfall on January 31.

Temperature Trends

  • Northwest India: Gradual rise in minimum temperatures by 2-3°C over the next five days.

  • Central and East India: Rise in minimum temperatures by 2-4°C over the next three days, with no significant change thereafter.

  • Rest of India: No major temperature fluctuations expected.
