IMD Weather Systems and Forecast & Warnings

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued several forecasts and warnings, shedding light on weather patterns across the nation. A significant trough extending from a cyclonic circulation over north Odisha to east Vidarbha, alongside an anti-cyclonic circulation over the west-central Bay of Bengal, is set to influence weather conditions.

According to the IMD, Gangetic West Bengal braces for scattered to fairly widespread rainfall, accompanied by isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) from today till March 20. Jharkhand, Odisha, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and East Madhya Pradesh should prepare for isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) during the same period. Additionally, isolated hailstorms are likely over Vidarbha on March 17 and 18, and over East Madhya Pradesh on March 18 and 19. Telangana Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam may witness isolated light rainfall due to the trough extending from east Vidarbha to north Tamil Nadu. Arunachal Pradesh anticipates isolated to scattered light/moderate rainfall/snowfall, while Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura prepare for isolated to scattered light rainfall from March 15 to 21.

A fresh Western Disturbance is likely to impact the Western Himalayan Region from the night of March 20, leading to isolated light rainfall/snowfall over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad on March 20 and 21, and over Himachal Pradesh on March 21.

Maximum Temperature Forecast

In terms of temperature trends, maximum temperatures are notably above normal in isolated pockets of south Vidarbha, Telangana, Rayalaseema, and Tamil Nadu by 3-4°C, and above normal by 1-3°C over the rest of Peninsular India, expected to persist for the next 4-5 days. Hot and humid conditions are likely to prevail over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal for the next 2 days, and over Kerala and Mahe, Rayalaseema for the next 5 days. East India can expect no significant change in maximum temperatures for the next 3 days, followed by a decrease of 2-4°C thereafter. West and Northwest India may experience a gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 2-3°C over the next 4-5 days, while the rest of the country anticipates no significant change.

Impact and Actions Due to Thunderstorms and Hailstorms
