Weather Update: Deep Depression Near Bay of Bengal Set to Intensify, Expected to Impact Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh

A Deep Depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal is moving north-northwestward, likely to impact the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts with strong winds and heavy rainfall. A Western Disturbance is also active in the mid-tropospheric westerlies.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an update on significant weather systems affecting India, including a Deep Depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal and a Western Disturbance in the northern region. These systems are expected to bring notable changes in weather patterns, with potential heavy rainfall and strong winds impacting several states, particularly Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh. 

Weather Systems: Deep Depression Over Bay of Bengal

A Deep Depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal is moving towards the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts and is expected to make landfall between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram on the morning of November 30, 2024. It may bring wind speeds of 50-60 kmph, with gusts up to 70 kmph, and has a chance of intensifying into a cyclonic storm with stronger winds by November 29. Coastal areas are advised to stay alert. Additionally, a Western Disturbance is influencing weather patterns over northern regions.

The forecast highlights widespread light to moderate rainfall, with heavy to very heavy downpours and isolated extremely heavy rainfall in specific areas, especially Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala.

Fog and Temperature Updates

IMD has highlighted significant changes in fog and temperature patterns across various regions. Dense fog is expected to persist in several northern and eastern states during the late-night and early-morning hours, while temperature variations indicate contrasting conditions, with some areas experiencing above-normal warmth and others recording significant drops.

Fog Conditions

Dense fog is anticipated in isolated pockets during late-night and early-morning hours in the following regions:

  • Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, and Bihar: Till November 30.

  • Uttar Pradesh: Till December 2.

Temperature Overview

India is experiencing varied temperature patterns, with significant differences observed across regions. While some areas report above-normal minimum temperatures, others face below-average conditions. Here's a detailed overview of the current temperature observations and forecast trends across the country.

  • Current Observations:
    • Minimum temperatures are appreciably above normal (3°C–5°C) in Bihar and slightly above normal (1°C–3°C) in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and West Bengal.

    • Minimum temperatures are significantly below normal (-5°C to -3°C) in Marathwada, Vidarbha, and Madhya Maharashtra.

    • The lowest minimum temperature recorded was 6.5°C in Mandla, Madhya Pradesh.

  • Forecast:
    • No major changes in minimum temperatures over northwest, east India, and Madhya Pradesh in the next five days.

    • Gradual rise of 2°C–4°C expected in western and central India (excluding Madhya Pradesh).

The Delhi/NCR region is set to experience stable weather conditions over the next few days, characterized by clear skies and mild temperatures.
