Weather Update: IMD Issues Alerts for Heavy Rain and Storms in Delhi, Kerala, Maharashtra, Northeast, and Other States Till May 31

IMD has forecasted widespread heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across multiple regions as the monsoon advances further into India. Northeast, West Coast, and North India are set to experience intense weather activity till May 31.

As the Southwest Monsoon advances further across the country, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy rainfall in several regions, including the Northeast, West Coast, Central India, and Delhi-NCR. A well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a depression, bringing heavy to extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms along its path. Here are the details:

Monsoon Progresses Further Across India

The IMD confirmed that the Southwest Monsoon has further advanced into more parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha as of May 28, 2025. The northern limit of the monsoon now extends from Mumbai and Adilabad to Rayagada and Goalpara, indicating a significant seasonal shift.

The northeastern states are on high alert with forecasts of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall till May 30. States like Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Tripura are likely to witness intense downpours accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

West Coast Sees Persistent Monsoon Showers

Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, and coastal Maharashtra are witnessing intense monsoon showers, which are likely to continue for the next 3–4 days. IMD warns of extremely heavy rainfall particularly in Kerala and ghat regions of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Fresh Western Disturbance Brings Storms to North India

A fresh Western Disturbance is expected to affect northwest India from May 29. States like Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi-NCR are likely to see rainfall, thunderstorms, gusty winds, and even dust storms in Rajasthan.

Rainfall activity is set to intensify in regions like Vidarbha, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Gangetic West Bengal. Thunderstorm and gusty wind warnings are in place, especially for East Madhya Pradesh and Bihar.

Despite monsoon showers, heat wave conditions are expected to continue in isolated pockets of West Rajasthan on May 29. Northwest India may experience a short-term rise in temperatures before a noticeable dip due to incoming rain.
