Weather Update: Monsoon Brings Heavy to Very Heavy Rains Across Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Odisha, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Northeast India

A low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal and active weather systems are bringing widespread heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across many parts of India, especially the west coast and northeastern regions. Meanwhile, the Southwest Monsoon continues to advance, with varying temperature trends and localized heatwave conditions in some areas.

The India Meteorological Department has reported the formation of a low-pressure area over the Northwest Bay of Bengal, which is expected to strengthen as it moves northwards. Meanwhile, heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecasted to continue along the west coast, especially in Kerala, Karnataka, coastal Maharashtra, and Goa, with some regions likely to experience extremely heavy downpours. Additionally, a fresh Western Disturbance is set to influence Northwest India soon, bringing changes in weather conditions across the region. Here are the details

Low Pressure Area & Monsoon 

A low-pressure system over the Northwest Bay of Bengal near Odisha’s coast is expected to intensify and move northwards over the next 48 hours. This system will influence rainfall patterns, particularly in eastern India.

Meanwhile, the Southwest Monsoon is steadily advancing, with favorable conditions for further spread into Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and northeastern states within the next 2-3 days.

Heavy Rainfall Over West Coast: Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra & Goa

The west coast states, including Kerala, Karnataka, coastal Maharashtra, and Goa, will experience heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next 6 to 7 days. Kerala is likely to witness extremely heavy rainfall between May 28th and 30th, with Konkan and ghat areas of Maharashtra and Karnataka also seeing very heavy rainfall on May 28th.

Northeast India is forecasted to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms for the next week. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Mizoram will see isolated very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on specific days.

East and Central India: Scattered Rain with Thunderstorms

Regions like Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, and parts of Madhya Pradesh and Bihar will see scattered to fairly widespread rain with thunderstorms. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected in Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal during the last days of May.
