India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced the further withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from parts of northwest India while warning of a fresh spell of rainfall in several regions due to multiple weather systems. The monsoon withdrawal line now extends through Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, with conditions expected to become favourable for its retreat from more areas within the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal and another likely formation later this week are forecast to bring heavy rains across eastern, central, southern, and western India.
Monsoon Withdrawal Update
IMD said the withdrawal line currently passes through Tarn Taran, Sangrur, Jind, Rewari, Tonk, Mahesana, and Porbandar. In the coming days, more parts of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir will see the withdrawal of the monsoon.

Fresh Weather Systems in the Bay of Bengal
A low-pressure area is currently positioned over coastal West Bengal and north Odisha, which is likely to persist for the next 24 hours before weakening. However, IMD has predicted a fresh low-pressure system forming over the northwest Bay of Bengal around September 25. This system is expected to intensify into a depression and move westward, crossing the South Odisha–North Andhra Pradesh coast around September 27.

While the monsoon is retreating from northwest India, several regions, particularly in the east, central, and southern states, are gearing up for another wet spell. The upcoming low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall along the Odisha and Andhra Pradesh coasts by the weekend.
