Weather Update: IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Alerts for Kerala, Odisha, Maharashtra and Other States

IMD has issued heavy rainfall alerts for several states including Kerala, Odisha, and Maharashtra from July 23 to 26 due to active monsoon conditions and a developing low-pressure system. Authorities warn of flooding, landslides, and rough sea conditions in affected regions.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh weather alert for multiple states, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall between July 23 and July 26, triggered by active monsoon conditions. The warning comes as a low-pressure area is expected to develop over the northern Bay of Bengal around July 24, likely intensifying rainfall activity across the southern, eastern, and central regions of the country.

Kerala to Witness Very Heavy Rain till July 25

IMD has placed several districts in Kerala under red, orange, and yellow alerts till July 25. Widespread rainfall is likely to continue due to strong westerly winds and the formation of a trough. Districts such as Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Kozhikode are likely to receive extremely heavy showers.

In coastal areas, waves up to 2.8–3.0 meters have been forecast. The sea is expected to remain rough, and fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea. Authorities are closely monitoring river levels and landslide-prone regions.

Odisha Braces for Increased Rainfall from July 24

Odisha is expected to witness a spike in rainfall activity beginning July 24, with an orange alert issued for districts like Keonjhar, Cuttack, Sambalpur, and Angul. The rainfall is linked to the upcoming low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which may intensify into a well-marked system or depression, bringing very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in isolated places.

As of July 22, Odisha had already received 16% more rainfall than normal, although some interior regions are still facing rain deficits. The state government has asked district administrations to remain on high alert for possible flooding in low-lying areas.

Maharashtra’s Ghat Areas on Alert

The ghat regions of Maharashtra, especially around Pune, have been receiving heavy rainfall, with Tamhini Ghat recording 92 mm in a single day. The IMD has placed an orange alert for parts of western Maharashtra and Konkan, predicting intense rain spells from July 24 to 26.

Rivers in some ghat areas are already flowing close to the danger mark, and landslide risks remain high. The state has issued advisories for travellers and trekkers to avoid hill stations and forest zones until the alert is lifted.

Rainfall in Uttarakhand Likely to Persist

After recording 210% excess rainfall in the past 24 hours, Uttarakhand is likely to continue witnessing moderate to heavy rain from July 23 onward. Hill districts like Pauri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, and Chamoli are at risk of landslides and road blockages due to saturated soil and ongoing precipitation.

The state government has directed officials to ensure the availability of rescue equipment and maintain 24x7 disaster control rooms. Pilgrims and tourists travelling to hill temples and trekking routes have been advised to check weather conditions in advance.

Isolated Showers in Haryana, Punjab, and Delhi

The northern plains, including Haryana, Punjab, and Delhi, may receive isolated spells of rain after July 23, according to the IMD forecast. Yellow alerts remain in place for Ambala, Panchkula, Yamunanagar, and adjoining areas in Haryana. The showers will bring some respite from the heat and humidity, though waterlogging may disrupt traffic in urban zones.

Forecast and Precautions

IMD has urged residents in affected states to take necessary precautions against flooding, landslides, waterlogging, and poor visibility on roads. Farmers in rain-prone regions are advised to safeguard their crops and follow local advisories for drainage and water management.
