India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an update on the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon and the prevailing weather systems across India. While the monsoon is gradually retreating from northern and western states, active weather systems are bringing localized rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds in various regions over the next week.
Southwest Monsoon Withdrawal Progress
The southwest monsoon is slowly retreating from northern and western India. As of 20th September, the withdrawal line passes through Bhatinda, Fatehabad, Pilani, Ajmer, Deesa and Bhuj. Conditions are favorable for further withdrawal from parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir in the next 2–3 days.
Weather Systems Driving Current Conditions
Several upper air cyclonic circulations and troughs are influencing India’s weather:
-
Cyclonic circulation over north Andaman Sea & Myanmar coast, moving north-northwest and likely reaching the north Bay of Bengal by 22nd September.
-
Fresh low-pressure area expected off Myanmar-Bangladesh coast around 25th September.
-
Upper air circulations over northwest Uttar Pradesh, northeast Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and northeast Assam are causing isolated rainfall and thunderstorms.
These systems are leading to light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, gusty winds, and isolated heavy showers in many parts of India.
East & Central India Weather Forecast
East and central regions will see scattered rainfall and thunderstorms over the coming week. Gusty winds up to 40 kmph are also expected in some areas.
