Weather Update: Monsoon Brings Heavy Rain to Kerala, Assam & Maharashtra; Heatwave Hits Rajasthan, UP & MP; Delhi Gets Light Rain and Storms – Check Full Forecast Here

IMD forecasts heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across Northeast, South, and West India, while heatwave conditions persist in parts of North and Central India. The southwest monsoon continues to advance steadily, bringing relief to several regions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a mixed weather across the country, with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely in Northeast India and parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. South Peninsular India is also expected to see continued rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds. Meanwhile, parts of North and Northwest India are bracing for intense heatwave conditions, particularly in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Jammu. The southwest monsoon has advanced into more parts of the south Arabian Sea, Maldives, Comorin, and Bay of Bengal. It has also covered the Andaman Islands and is expected to progress further over central and northeastern Bay of Bengal in the next 3–4 days.

Weather Systems in Action

Several upper air cyclonic circulations and troughs are influencing rainfall and wind patterns:

  • Cyclonic circulation over Karnataka coast may develop into a low-pressure area by May 22.

  • Circulations over Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Telangana, and Bay of Bengal are contributing to rain and storms across their respective regions.

Northeast India to Witness Heavy Showers and Thunderstorms

The IMD predicts fairly to Heavy rainfall over the Northeast with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30–50 kmph) till May 23. Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh are likely to receive isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, especially on May 18.

Rainfall and Thunderstorms Over South Peninsular India

South India will continue to experience daily thunderstorms and rain. States including Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu are set to receive heavy rainfall along with gusty winds of up to 50 kmph. Very heavy rainfall is likely in parts of Kerala and Karnataka on May 20.

West India Braces for Rain, Squalls, and Very Heavy Showers

Several parts of Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Konkan-Goa will witness thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and high wind speeds. Thundersqualls reaching up to 70 kmph are likely over Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada on select days.

East and Central India Expect Scattered Thunderstorms

Moderate rainfall with thunderstorms is expected across West Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand, and Bihar. Odisha and Chhattisgarh will experience strong winds with potential squalls of up to 70 kmph. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim may get isolated heavy rainfall until May 21.
