Monsoon Withdrawal Begins, IMD Warns of Heavy Rain in Northeast, Maharashtra and Bihar

The southwest monsoon has started withdrawing from parts of northwest India, while multiple weather systems are set to bring heavy rainfall across northeast, central, southern, and western regions this week. Delhi-NCR will see partly cloudy skies with mild temperature fluctuations in coming days.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported significant weather changes across the country, with the southwest monsoon beginning to withdraw from northwestern regions. At the same time, multiple cyclonic circulations are expected to bring widespread rain and thunderstorms to the northeast, central, southern, and western parts of India in the coming days. Monsoon Withdrawal from Northwest India

The line of withdrawal of the southwest monsoon currently passes through Sri Ganganagar, Nagaur, Jodhpur, and Barmer in Rajasthan. According to IMD, conditions are favourable for further withdrawal from additional parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, and Gujarat over the next two days.

Northeast India to Receive Heavy Showers

The northeast is expected to witness consistent rainfall due to cyclonic circulations over Bihar, Assam, and Meghalaya. Arunachal Pradesh is set for very heavy rainfall on September 16, while Nagaland, Assam, and Meghalaya will face heavy spells on September 16. Rainfall activity will continue across Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura till September 21.

South Peninsular India: Gusty Winds and Showers

Southern states will continue to receive rainfall accompanied by gusty winds of 30–40 kmph. Tamil Nadu will see spells from September 16–19, while Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam will face strong winds and rain in coming days. Telangana, Rayalaseema, and North Interior Karnataka are expected to witness moderate to heavy rainfall until September 17.

East & Central India: Heavy Rain Spells Ahead

East and Central India will witness widespread showers, with Bihar, Jharkhand, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim on high alert for very heavy rainfall between September 16–17. Andaman & Nicobar Islands will also face repeated spells from September 17–20.

West India: Extremely Heavy Rain Over Konkan

Maharashtra and Gujarat are likely to see intense spells, with Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra forecast to receive extremely heavy rainfall (≥21 cm) on September 16. Marathwada will also experience very heavy showers on September 16.

Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will receive rainfall on September 16, with Uttarakhand expected to face very heavy downpours on September 16. East Uttar Pradesh will also see prolonged spells until September 19.

Delhi-NCR Weather Outlook

The national capital region will not see significant rainfall activity but will experience fluctuating temperatures and partly cloudy skies from September 16–18. Maximum temperatures are expected to remain slightly above normal, before dipping below normal later in the week.
