Weather Update: Monsoon Brings Heavy Rain to South and Northeast; Heatwave and Dust Storms Grip Rajasthan, UP, Bihar, and Central India

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are anticipated in Northeast and South India, while severe heatwaves persist in the North and Central regions. The IMD also issues warnings for dust storms, strong winds, and the continued advancement of the monsoon across the country.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely to continue over Northeast India and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim for the next five days.

Rainfall with thunderstorms is also expected to persist across South Peninsular India, with isolated heavy showers over Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu during the next three days. Meanwhile, heatwave conditions are likely to affect parts of West Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar during this period.

Monsoon Watch: Steady Progress Over Southern Seas

The Southwest Monsoon is making steady progress, having already advanced into parts of the southeast Arabian Sea, the Maldives, the Comorin area, and the South Bay of Bengal, including the Andaman Sea.

As of 15th May, the northern limit of the monsoon extends up to the southern Andaman Sea, signalling favourable conditions for further advancement in the next three to four days. The IMD has confirmed that all these regions have officially entered the monsoon phase, marking the beginning of its northward journey across the subcontinent.

Northeast India: Heavy Rainfall and Thunderstorms Likely

The IMD predicts widespread rainfall across the Northeast for the next five days. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are expected across Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.

South Peninsular India: Continued Rainfall with Isolated Heavy Showers

Southern states will continue to receive rainfall over the next five days. The presence of a cyclonic circulation over Karnataka and Tamil Nadu is expected to bring thunderstorms and lightning, with heavy rains at isolated places.

North & Central India: Heatwave Warnings and Dust Storm Events

While monsoon winds approach the southern coast, North and Central India are reeling under intense heat. Heatwave conditions have been reported across Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and parts of Madhya Pradesh.

A dust storm also affected visibility in Delhi-NCR on the night of 14th May, with winds of 30–40 kmph reported. IGI Airport saw visibility drop to 1200 meters.

Northwest India: Dust, Rain and Thunderstorms Ahead

Dust-laden winds and heat have dominated northwest India, but rain and thundershowers are expected later this week. Isolated rainfall is forecast over parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi-NCR.

Delhi NCR region will see a mix of hot weather and occasional gusty winds with chances of thunderstorms from 16th to 18th May.

The IMD advises residents in heatwave-affected regions to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, and take necessary precautions against heat-related illnesses. In areas expecting heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, people should stay indoors during lightning activity, avoid waterlogged zones, and follow local advisories. Farmers are also urged to monitor weather updates closely and plan agricultural activities accordingly.
