The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an updated weather forecast as India is set to experience diverse weather conditions this week. Southern coastal states will see heavy rainfall due to a developing low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal, while northern and eastern regions are expected to experience dense fog and cold wave conditions.

Weather Systems and Associated Rainfall

  • Low-Pressure Area in the Bay of Bengal: A low-pressure area has formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining east Equatorial Indian Ocean as of December 7. It is likely to move west-northwestwards and become more marked in the next 24 hours. The system is expected to reach the southwest Bay of Bengal off the Sri Lanka-Tamil Nadu coasts by December 11.

  • Western Disturbance and Northern Weather Conditions: A fresh Western Disturbance is likely to cause light to moderate rain/snowfall over the Western Himalayan region from December 8–11. Isolated light rainfall is also expected in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh on December 8–9.
