The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that a Western Disturbance, interacting with easterly winds, is likely to bring light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms, accompanied by hailstorms, across Northwest and Central India on 27th and 28th December 2024. This weather system, along with other active systems, will significantly impact various parts of the country, bringing rain, snowfall, dense fog, and cold wave conditions in the coming days.

Rainfall and Cyclonic Circulation

A well-marked low-pressure area over the Southwest and Westcentral Bay of Bengal has weakened but continues to influence weather in its vicinity. As a result:

  • Coastal Andhra Pradesh is likely to witness heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning on 27th December.

  • Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal may experience moderate rainfall with thunderstorms on 27th December.

Western Disturbance and Rain/Snow Predictions

A western disturbance, coupled with easterly winds, is bringing significant moisture from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal:

  • 27th-28th December: Widespread rain or snowfall is expected over the Western Himalayan Region.

  • Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. Hailstorms could affect these regions, particularly on 27th and 28th December.

Temperature Trends

The IMD has reported a mix of temperature changes:

  • Minimum temperatures remain below 0°C in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, while regions like West Rajasthan recorded the lowest at 5.0°C.

  • A slight increase of 2°C is expected over Northwest India during the next three days, followed by a gradual dip.

  • Cold wave and cold day conditions are expected in Himachal Pradesh, parts of Rajasthan, and Jammu & Kashmir during the coming days.

Dense Fog and Ground Frost Warnings

  • Dense fog: Likely in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Assam, Meghalaya, Odisha, and Rajasthan during late-night and early morning hours.

  • Ground frost: Expected in isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh on 29th, and 30th December.
