Several parts of India will experience heavy rain in the coming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a new spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall over east-central India beginning the night of August 18.
Meanwhile, the current heavy rains over Gujarat and south Rajasthan are expected to subside in the coming days. Subdued rainfall is expected to continue in the southern parts of the Peninsula for the next three to four days, with the exception of Tamil Nadu, where isolated heavy rainfall is expected until August 19.
The western end of the monsoon trough is south of its normal position and is expected to stay that way for the next two days. It is expected to gradually move northwards after that. The monsoon trough has reached its normal position.
The weather service forecasted heavy rain in the country's west. "Fairly widespread/widespread light/moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorm/lightning very likely over Saurashtra & Kutch on 17th & 18th and over Konkan & Goa on 17th, 20th & 21st August, 2022," the MeT Department said in its weather bulletin.
Under the influence of a Low-Pressure Area that is expected to form over the North Bay of Bengal around August 19, fairly widespread to widespread light or moderate rainfall is expected over Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh until August 21.
"Isolated heavy rainfall with and thunderstorm/lightning very likely over Gangetic West Bengal on the 18th and 19th; Odisha on the 18th and 20th; Jharkhand on the 19th and 20th; East Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh on the 19th and 21st; Vidarbha on the 20th and 21st; and over West Madhya Pradesh on the 21st August, 2022," the IMD said.
Isolated heavy to very heavy rain is also expected in east Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh on August 20 and 21, in Vidarbha on August 21, and in Odisha on August 19 and 20.
"Fairly widespread/widespread light/moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorm/lightning very likely over Uttarakhand during 18th-20th; Himachal Pradesh during 19th-21st; and East Uttar Pradesh on 19th & 20th August, 2022." Heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning are expected in the northeastern states over the next few days.
"Fairly widespread/widespread light/moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorm/lightning very likely over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on 19th; Assam and Meghalaya on 19th-21st; and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on 18th-21st August, 2022," the weather service predicted. On August 18, rain is also expected in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
