WBSSC Recruitment 2025: The West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) has announced one of the largest teacher recruitment drives in recent years, offering a total of 35,726 vacancies for assistant teachers across government-aided and sponsored secondary and higher secondary schools in the state. This recruitment move comes after a Supreme Court directive and aims to restore the education workforce affected by previous irregularities in the recruitment process.

Overview of the Recruitment Drive

The recruitment will be conducted for two major categories:

  • Assistant Teachers for Classes 9 and 10: 23,212 posts

  • Assistant Teachers for Classes 11 and 12: 12,514 posts

Online applications will open on June 16, 2025, at 5:00 PM and will close on July 17, 2025, at 5:00 PM. Candidates can apply through the official WBSSC website.

Reason Behind the Recruitment

The large-scale recruitment has been necessitated due to the cancellation of the 2016 recruitment panel. The panel was declared void due to several irregularities including tampered merit lists, manipulation of Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets, and unauthorized appointments. These irregularities led to the termination of more than 25,700 teaching and non-teaching jobs. To address this situation and ensure fairness, the Supreme Court ordered a fresh and transparent recruitment process.

What’s New in the Recruitment Process

To prevent any form of malpractice, WBSSC has introduced several changes to make the recruitment process more transparent and reliable:

  1. Carbon Copy of OMR Sheets: Candidates will be given carbon copies of their OMR sheets, enabling them to retain a copy for personal records.

  2. Release of Answer Keys: The commission will publish answer keys after the written exam, allowing candidates to verify their responses.

  3. Extended Record Preservation: All OMR sheets and their digital versions will be stored for at least three years. This is an increase from the earlier policy where records were maintained for only one year.

  4. Video Recording of Interviews: All interviews will be recorded and preserved to ensure transparency and accountability during the selection process.

  5. Extended Validity of the Recruitment Panel: The validity of the final merit panel has been extended to one and a half years, allowing more time for fair appointments.

Special Provisions for Affected Candidates

In an effort to support the candidates who lost their jobs due to the cancellation of the 2016 panel, the state government has introduced specific provisions:

  • Age Relaxation: Affected candidates will be eligible for age relaxation, making them eligible to apply again regardless of their current age.

  • Recognition of Past Experience: Candidates who had earlier served in government-aided or sponsored schools will receive credit for their teaching experience in the selection process.

  • Application Start Date: June 16, 2025 (5:00 PM)

  • Application End Date: July 17, 2025 (5:00 PM)

  • Start of Counseling: November 20, 2025

The transparency measures being implemented this time are expected to ensure that only eligible and meritorious candidates are selected.

The WBSSC's recruitment of 35,726 assistant teachers is a critical step towards strengthening the education sector in West Bengal. With clear guidelines, transparent processes, and special consideration for previously affected candidates, the commission is making a sincere effort to rebuild trust and integrity in teacher appointments.
