The Ministry of Textiles has organized a week-long celebration of International Women's Day #ViraasatCelebratingShakti at Handloom Haat, Janpath, New Delhi from March 6th to March 12th, 2023.
75 stalls have been set up in the spirit of India's Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav by women handloom weavers, craft persons, entrepreneurs, and designers, including many national awardees.
The Union Minister of State for Railways and Textiles spoke to the US Secretary of Commerce about the importance of handloom and handicrafts as part of India's cultural heritage and as a source of employment for a large number of people, particularly women.
She also emphasized the circularity and sustainability of handicrafts and handlooms. Circularity in textiles aims to transform the linear value chain of take-make-dispose into a circular system in which value is retained for a longer period of time.
The emphasis is on reducing waste in the value chain through the use of various circular strategies such as recycling, repair, reuse/remanufacture, rental, and resale.
According to the SDG commitments, sustainability has gained importance. Handloom and handicraft pioneer sustainability by utilizing natural local raw materials, natural dyes, and recycled materials, among other things.
