According to a press release issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday, heavy rain is expected throughout the west peninsular coast during the next two days. For the next five days, severe rainfall is expected to persist over northeast India, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim.
In the meanwhile, heatwave conditions are expected to continue in isolated pockets throughout northwest, central, and eastern India during the next two days. After that, the conditions are expected to lessen.
SW Monsoon Update
The southwest monsoon has moved across most of the Konkan today, including Mumbai and portions of Madhya Maharashtra. The monsoon season officially begins on June 11 in Mumbai. According to IMD Mumbai, thunderstorms with lightning and moderate to heavy rain with gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph are highly likely to occur in isolated locations in the districts of Thane, Raigad, Palghar, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and Mumbai over the next 3-4 hours.
Although the IMD predicted partly cloudy sky with the likelihood of light thunderstorms during the day, the lowest temperature in Delhi on Saturday was 29.7 degrees Celsius, two degrees above average. According to a Skymet Weather report, isolated areas of Delhi, Haryana, northwest Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh may encounter heatwave conditions. The maximum temperature in Delhi-NCR and other areas of northwest India may drop a few degrees over the weekend, according to the IMD, but no significant relief is expected until June 15.
Air quality may improve in Delhi in next few days: Safar
According to weather scientists, the air quality is expected to improve over the next few days due to an increase in wind speed and dispersion.
From Sunday to Tuesday, the wind speed is expected to be approximately 20-30 km/h, generating moderate dispersion of pollutants, according to the Union ministry of earth science's air quality monitoring centre, System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (Safar).
