On July 8, 2025, Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Jagat Prakash Nadda met with Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy in New Delhi to review the state’s fertilizer requirements for the ongoing Kharif season. The Telangana CM requested uninterrupted supplies of urea for the peak agricultural months of July and August, citing the urgent needs of farmers across the state.
Responding to the request, Minister Nadda assured full cooperation and directed officials from the Department of Fertilizers to ensure that adequate supplies are dispatched to Telangana as per actual demand. “The genuine needs of farmers will be met without delay,” he said.
However, the Union Minister also raised concerns over the rising consumption of urea in the state. He pointed out that urea sales during the Rabi 2024–25 season increased by 21% compared to the previous year, while the current Kharif season has already recorded a 12.4% rise in usage compared to the same period in 2024. Nadda expressed concern that such overuse of chemical fertilizers could be detrimental to soil health and called for more balanced application practices.
During the meeting, Secretary of the Department of Fertilizers Rajat Kumar Mishra informed state officials about the PM PRANAM scheme, which aims to promote balanced and sustainable use of fertilizers. The scheme offers incentives to states that reduce chemical fertilizer consumption and adopt organic or alternative farming practices. Mishra also urged Telangana officials to prevent the diversion of urea for non-agricultural purposes and ensure equitable distribution of fertilizers across all districts.
The meeting was attended by Members of Parliament Mallu Ravi and Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy, Telangana’s Special Representative in New Delhi A.P. Jithender Reddy, and senior officials from both the central and state governments.
