Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Friday announced a compensation of Rs 50.88 crore for crop loss caused by the Northeast Monsoon to 48,593 farmers from 27 districts, including the worst-affected Mayiladuthurai.
The monsoon had caused extensive damage to standing crops in many districts across the state from October 1 to December 4, 2022, according to an official press release.
Heavy rains on November 3 and 11, respectively, severely harmed crops grown in the Mayiladuthurai district of Sirkazhi, Kollidam, and Sembanarkoil. On November 3, there was a lot of rain. While the paddy fields were recovering, the unprecedented rains flooded approximately 30,000 hectares of cultivable land. Crop yields in Sirkazhi, Kollidam, Sembanarkoil, and Tharangambadi have decreased.
On December 14, the Chief Minister visited the districts of Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore, which had been hit by unprecedented rains, and distributed relief to those in need. He also directed officials to take appropriate measures to assist affected paddy growers.
As a result, approximately 40,031 farmers will receive Rs 43.92 crore in compensation for crop damage on 32,533.4630 hectares of land in the Mayiladuthurai district.
Rs 6.96 crore to 8,562 farmers for crop loss on 5,222.192 hectares of agricultural land in 26 districts, including Cuddalore, Tiruvarur, and Ariyalur, for a total of Rs 50.88 crore for 48,593 farmers.
