Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Monday announced that a relief package of Rs 20,000 per hectare would be given to Cauvery delta farmers for loss of yield to the tune of 33% or more for ready to harvest paddy crop affected by unseasonal heavy rainfall.
The damaged crops were examined by the Agriculture Minister M. R. K. Panneerselvam, the Food Minister R. Sakkarapani, and other key officials.
The Tamil Nadu government's relief package for farmers affected by unseasonal heavy rainfall in the Cauvery delta region aims to provide comprehensive support to farmers who have suffered crop damage. The package includes various forms of financial assistance, including compensation for crop losses, subsidies for harvest machinery and seed, and additional evaluations for insurance purposes.
The CM after considering comments from a panel of Ministers and officials that examined agricultural losses brought on by unseasonal rains said that proper steps will be taken to provide relief to farmers in the Cauvery delta region. The past week had significant rainfall in the delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruchirappalli, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Ariyalur, and Pudukottai.
Compensation: The government will provide Rs 20,000 per hectare for paddy crops that have suffered a loss of yield of 33% or more. For damaged pulse crops, the farmers will receive Rs 3,000 per hectare. This compensation will help farmers cover their losses and get back on their feet.
Subsidies: To help farmers with their harvest, the government will provide 50% subsidies for harvest machinery through the Agricultural Engineering Department. Pulse farmers will also receive 8 kilograms of pulse seed at a 50% subsidy. These subsidies will help farmers carry out their operations smoothly and efficiently.
Assessment: The Revenue and Agriculture departments will work together to assess the crop damage caused by the unseasonal heavy rainfall. If crop assessment has already been completed for insurance purposes, steps will be taken for additional evaluation. This will help ensure that farmers receive the compensation they are entitled to.
The Chief Minister has also written a letter to the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, regarding the situation and has urged the central government to relax paddy procurement norms, including stipulations on moisture content. This will help farmers sell their crops more easily and receive fair prices for their produce. The relief package is a comprehensive effort by the Tamil Nadu government to support farmers affected by the unseasonal heavy rainfall in the Cauvery delta region. The package includes financial assistance, subsidies, and evaluations that will help farmers recover from their losses and get back on their feet.
