Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan recently visited the ICAR Directorate of Groundnut Research in Junagadh, where he reviewed key research activities, interacted with farmers, and took part in fieldwork. During the visit, he announced that the government is on track to make two crore women ‘Lakhpati Didis’, self-help group (SHG) members earning Rs 10 lakh annually, by August 15.
Union minister released the 2024 Annual Report of the institute and launched a compilation of 50 success stories of Lakhpati Didis, highlighting how rural women are transforming their lives through the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM). So far, 1.5 crore women have crossed the Lakhpati milestone, he said, adding, “Women are driving a quiet revolution in India’s villages by challenging stereotypes and leading economic change.”
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi envisions every woman as self-reliant and economically strong. We are committed to ensuring that,” Chouhan said while extending Raksha Bandhan greetings to women beneficiaries.
Underscoring the need for skill development and financial support, he said that SHG women are making local products visible at national and global platforms. “With timely credit, training, and infrastructure, these women can work wonders. Their efforts are building a ‘Viksit Bharat’,” he added.
Chouhan also visited the groundnut fields in Manekvada village, where he personally participated in field activities like weeding and hoeing alongside farmers. He inquired about challenges in crop production, seed quality, fertiliser use, and irrigation issues. Farmers also briefed him on the impact of seasonal shifts and fluctuating market prices.
The minister showed particular interest in ‘Girnar-4’, Gujarat’s improved groundnut variety, and sought technical details from field experts. He also reviewed the use of drones and other advanced farm tools, collecting feedback directly from farmers about their efficiency and utility.
Appreciating their resilience and contribution, Chouhan said, “Our food providers are the backbone of the country’s food security. The government stands with them at every step and will continue to address their concerns.”
