Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, chaired an important review meeting on January 13, 2025, with senior officials from the Agriculture Ministry to discuss critical issues facing the agricultural sector. The discussions covered various aspects of agriculture, including farm produce marketing, import-export policies, and weather-related challenges. The Minister stressed the importance of regular and coordinated engagement with State Governments to effectively address grassroots-level issues.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced his commitment to conducting weekly reviews on agricultural issues, in addition to holding periodic high-level meetings with State Agriculture Ministers. He emphasized the importance of maintaining consistent communication with State Governments, noting that addressing farmers' challenges requires coordinated efforts at all levels of administration. Key topics for these discussions will include fair pricing for produce, farmers’ distress, sowing patterns, marketing strategies, and the impacts of weather.

The Minister has scheduled a review meeting with the States today on January 14, 2025, to discuss the current rates for lentils and the procurement prices for key varieties such as Arhar, Chana, and Masur, focusing on both the Kharif 2024 and Rabi 2024 crops.

A comprehensive weekly analysis by the Trade Division will evaluate the need for lentil and oilseed imports in relation to domestic production and consumption trends. This comparative study will also explore export opportunities, detailing the costs and benefits for farmers and consumers while proposing actionable interventions.

Further, the Minister stressed the importance of stringent pest management protocols and oversight in pesticide distribution. Reports on maximum retail prices (MRP) and their alignment with government-notified rates will be routinely monitored through Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs). These reports aim to ensure transparency and accountability in pest control practices and pricing.

The government aims to create a robust agricultural framework that supports sustainable growth and welfare in the sector by addressing core issues such as pricing, production, and marketing.
