Noted Social activist Padma Shri Tulasi Munda visited ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Kausalyaganga, Bhubaneswar. Padma Shri Munda inaugurated the 31st Annual Day celebrations of this institute. An ardent believer in Gandhian philosophy, Munda urged ICAR-CIFA employees to devote at least two hours a week for social welfare activities. As a responsible citizen, one must work for the upliftment of downtrodden people and help to ensure birthrights to the underprivileged. She underlined the importance of holding gram sabha and stakeholder consultation for effective outreach activities.
Padma Shri Munda gave away ICAR-CIFA annual awards and special appreciation awards to employees for their outstanding contribution to institution building activities.
Dr I K Patro, VC, Ravenshaw University, Cuttack said fish has been one of the great friend of evolution. Fish genome has been used in many modern day biotechnology research. He appreciated the research environment prevailing at the institute. Packaging of research in usable form by the end users and showcasing of achievements is of paramount importance, said Prof Patro.
The Institute established on this very day, three decades ago, has contributed immensely towards growth and development of the freshwater aquaculture sector. During the last fiscal year the institute has mobilized external research funding to the tune of Rs 10 crores. The year has been one of the most productive years in terms of quality research, publications, no. of MOU signed, technology commercialization and transfer, outreach activities etc. Besides research, the institute is also involved in livelihood development, empowerment of women, entrepreneurship development; training and skill development in aquaculture. The institute is operating several flagship schemes of Govt. of India which includes Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav; Farmer First Project; Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Soil health card, Tribal Sub Plan, NEH etc. informs Dr J K Sundaray, Director, ICAR-CIFA. KVK Khordha under the administrative control of the institute conducted 19 OFT, 23 FLD, 66 training programs benefitting over 1700 farmers and farm women added Dr Sundaray.
Dr. S. K Srivastava, Director, ICAR-CIWA shared his views about convergence and women empowerment in agriculture and allied sector. Representatives of ICAR-IIWM, ICAR-CHES Bhubaneswar, NFDB & retired employees of ICAR-CIFA also attended the function. Dr N K Barik, Scientist thanked the Participants and the Chief Guest.
