Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for AYUSH and Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, today inaugurated an AYUSH Building Complex in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. This new infrastructure will house the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy's Regional Research Institute of Homoeopathy (RRIH) and the Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine's Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine (RRIUM).
The three-story building complex has medical and research facilities and covers an area of 1999.82 square metres. The institutes will provide services such as OPD consultations, medicines, and laboratory facilities for routine haematological and biochemistry testing for the paediatric, geriatric, and the general population, and will be led by separate Homoeopathic and Unani In-Charges.
Sonowal stated on this occasion that Indian traditional medicinal practices have been demonstrating their effect on the enrichment of human lives for many centuries. 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi has encouraged the incorporation of benefits of traditional and non-conventional systems with modern medicine,' he said.
He also stated that the AYUSH Ministry intends to establish the Regional Research Institute for Homoeopathy as an Institute of Homoeopathy for Allergic Disorders, as well as the Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine as a centre of excellence for Ilaj-Bit-Tadbeer, or Regimental Therapy.
'With the inauguration of the new infrastructure, the AYUSH Ministry has moved a step closer to its goal of encouraging the promotion and application of Indian traditional medicinal practices,' said Shri Sonowal. 'I hope that the institutes will benefit the people of Mumbai and Maharashtra greatly,' he added.
According to the AYUSH Minister, more than 22 crore people in India practiced yoga on International Yoga Day this year. 'The word Yoga means 'union,' he continued, 'and the Prime Minister has united people from all over the world through International Yoga Day.'
The inauguration was attended by Dr. Sangeeta A Duggal, Advisor, Homoeopathy, Ministry of AYUSH, Dr. Anil Khurana, Chairman, National Commission for Homoeopathy, Dr. Raj K Manchanda, Director of AYUSH, Govt. of Delhi, and several other dignitaries.
The Regional Research Institute for Homoeopathy (RRIH) in Navi Mumbai and the Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine (RRIUM) in Navi Mumbai are peripheral institutes that operate under the auspices of the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH) and the Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM), both of which are governed by the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India. Regional Research Institute for Homoeopathy (RRIH) was founded in Mumbai in 1979 as a Clinical Research Unit and was renamed Regional Research Institute for Homoeopathy in 1987.
Since 2010, the institute has been operating in the Navi Mumbai area in rented space. The Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine (RRIUM) began as the Clinical Research Unit (Unani) in 1981, was upgraded to RRIUM in 1986, and has been located in the Sir J. J. Hospital compound in Byculla since then.
