In a bid to engage directly with beneficiaries, Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying Parshottam Rupala spearheaded the Sagar Parikrama Phase-XII in West Bengal. The program, which commenced at Digha in the Purba Medinipur district, focused on interacting with fishermen, fisherwomen, and fish farmers to discuss the benefits of government schemes. During the event, beneficiaries expressed concerns, with a particular emphasis on diesel subsidies. Minister Rupala emphasized that the Sagar Parikrama's objective was to address these issues at the grassroots level.
Empowering Fisheries Sector Through PMMSY and KCC:
Under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and Kisan Credit Card (KCC), approximately Rs 150 Cr. has been sanctioned for projects, benefiting around 750 fishermen. The distribution of 16,000 KCCs further highlights the government's commitment to supporting the fisheries community.
Shankarpur Fishing Harbour: A Beacon of Progress
Continuing the Sagar Parikrama Yatra Phase-XII, the delegation reached Shankarpur Fishing Harbour. Minister Rupala announced a sanctioned project of around Rs 45 Cr. for the harbor, emphasizing the significant impact of PMMSY on India's fisheries sector. Beneficiaries shared success stories, attributing their gains to assets provided under PMMSY, such as two-wheelers with iceboxes. The on-ground interaction aimed to strengthen the bond between public authorities and local stakeholders.
Fisheries Development Opportunities Explored in Coastal Regions of West Bengal
The transformative Sagar Parikrama Phase-XII journey extended to various coastal regions, including Petuaghat Fishing Harbour, Bakkhali, and Ganga Sagar. Minister Rupala engaged with fisherwomen, fishermen, and fish farmers, discussing the potential of the PMMSY programme.
Expressing optimism, he believes it will substantially impact the Indian Fisheries Sector. With the presence of Dr. L.N Murthy and other key figures, the program witnessed the active participation of approximately 4,200 fishermen and various fisheries stakeholders.
Through direct engagement and project implementations, the government aims to uplift the lives of those dependent on fisheries and create a sustainable and prosperous future for the coastal communities.
