In a bid to bolster the fisheries sector in West Bengal, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Parshottam Rupala, along with MoS Dr. L Murugan, is set to participate in the Sagar Parikrama Phase-XII event scheduled from 10th to 11th January 2024. The event aims to recognize and felicitate beneficiaries of the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) and other stakeholders contributing to the progress of the fishing industry.

Sagar Parikrama Phase-XII Recognition of Progressive Stakeholders
During the Sagar Parikrama Phase-XII, Minister Rupala will extend acknowledgment to progressive fishermen, with a special focus on coastal fishermen, fish farmers, and young fisheries entrepreneurs. The felicitation ceremony will shed light on the best practices and initiatives implemented under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) scheme, KCC, and various other schemes designed to uplift the fishing community.
Sagar Parikrama Phase-XII: Coastal Coverage
The coastal regions of West Bengal, including Digha, Shankarpur Fishing Harbour, Sultanpur Fishing Harbour at Diamond Harbour, and Ganga Sagar, will be covered in the twelfth phase of Sagar Parikrama. The event will witness the active participation of senior officials from the Department of Fisheries, Government of India, Government of West Bengal, National Fisheries Development Board, Indian Coast Guard, Fishery Survey of India, fishermen associations, and other dignitaries.
Inclusive Engagement
Sagar Parikrama Phase-XII incorporates review sessions and interactive engagements with fishermen, fish farmers, and key stakeholders. Campaigns promoting KCC and other related events will unfold across the coastal regions of West Bengal, drawing participation from state fisheries officials, representatives of fishermen, fish farmers, entrepreneurs, cooperative society leaders, professionals, scientists, and stakeholders nationwide.

West Bengal, endowed with six agro-climatic regions, boasts diverse aquatic resources, including more than eight lakh hectares of inland water bodies and a 158 km coastline. The state's fishery sector encompasses a wide spectrum, ranging from cold-water fisheries to marine activities and everything in between, including inland, brackish water, and wetlands.
Sagar Parikrama's National Journey
The Sagar Parikrama Yatra commenced its first phase from Mandvi, Gujarat, on 5th March 2022. Since then, it has traversed eleven phases, covering coastal states and Union Territories such as Gujarat, Daman & Diu, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Andaman & Nicobar, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, and Odisha.
Through its extensive journey, spanning various coastal regions, the initiative not only addresses the diverse challenges faced by fishermen but also showcases the array of government schemes available for their benefit.
