In a major step toward bringing technology to rural India, the long-awaited launch of the Rural Technology Action Group (RuTAG) Smart Village Center (RSVC) took place on February 14, 2025, in Mandaura village, Sonipat. Inaugurated by Prof. Ajay Sood, the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, the center aims to bridge the gap between rural challenges and modern technological solutions.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Ajay Sood highlighted the importance of RSVC in addressing technological gaps in rural communities. He explained how this initiative seeks to introduce innovative solutions to tackle everyday challenges faced by villagers, such as preventing animal intrusion, promoting organic farming, and providing tools for small businesses like bread-making and bakery production. The center is expected to directly benefit farmers, artisans, and rural entrepreneurs by bringing technology to their doorstep.

Developed under the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser, the RSVC focuses on using technology to improve rural life. It will introduce technology-driven solutions, including satellite data for farming, water monitoring kits, solar power, Internet of Things (IoT) applications, organic fertilizers, and assistive technologies. By implementing these innovations at the grassroots level, RSVC will empower villages with sustainable and practical solutions that enhance livelihoods.

Additionally, the initiative includes assistive technologies for differently-abled individuals and financial inclusion apps, ensuring that modern advancements are accessible to all.

RSVC offers a range of technologies to address rural challenges, including improved agricultural practices, waste management, renewable energy solutions, and affordable housing innovations. Farmers and villagers will benefit from advancements such as improved post-harvest technologies. The center will also provide government scheme information through citizen-centric apps, helping villagers access financial support and welfare programs.

To strengthen rural businesses, RSVC will ensure market access for rural producers through partnerships with ONDC, Amazon, and Market Mirchi, enabling them to sell their products more easily. This initiative will boost income for local artisans and farmers by connecting them with larger markets.

The center will serve as a permanent hub at the Panchayat level, supporting 15-20 villages by fostering deep engagement and trust-building with local communities. It will operate under the guidance of leading institutions like IIT Madras, the Assistive Technology Foundation, and SELCO, ensuring that the solutions offered are practical and effective. The RSVC model also emphasizes capacity-building by collaborating with educational institutions and providing training in various trades, including bakery, bread-making, and financial literacy.

The initiative aligns with various government ministries, including Rural Development, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, and Labour, to support rural welfare. Plans are underway to expand the RSVC model nationwide, with 20 more centers in the pipeline. Additionally, the "Techpreneurs" program will empower women entrepreneurs to promote these technologies within their communities, ensuring long-term sustainability.

Key partners, including Commodore Sridhar Kotra, Founder of the Modern Village Foundation, and DP Goel, Chairman of the Chaalis Gaon Vikas Parishad, played crucial roles in making this vision a reality.

The launch event saw participation from government officials, corporate leaders, and NGOs, all working together to ensure RSVC's success. With its inauguration, Mandaura now stands as a model village, inspiring the establishment of future RSVCs across India.
