The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a wet spell over the northwest and eastern areas of India until May 24, providing relief from the blistering heat. From Saturday, the heatwave in some parts of the country began to subside.
"Fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall with isolated thunderstorm/lightning/gusty winds very likely over Jammu& Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand; scattered rainfall activity over Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and isolated rainfall activity over Rajasthan during the 21st-24th with peak rainfall intensity on May 23rd, 2022," according to the IMD's weather bulletin.
On May 22, an isolated hailstorm was forecast for Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand, as well as Himachal Pradesh until May 23, and Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and East Rajasthan on Monday, according to the weather station. Isolated heavy rainfall is also expected in Jammu and Kashmir on May 22 and 23 and Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and north Punjab on May 23.
Dust storm activity is expected in isolated areas across Rajasthan until May 24. Maximum temperatures will drop three to four degrees Celsius throughout most of Northwest India during the next three days, according to the IMD, with no major change after that.
Over the next five days, rain is expected in Bihar, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, and Odisha. Heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms/lightning are expected in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, as well as Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, over the next two days, according to the IMD.
It said, "Over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam-Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls and thunderstorm/lightning is very likely over the next two days, with rainfall intensity reducing thereafter.
On the 21st of May, isolated really heavy rains are also highly likely over Meghalaya. Rainfall is forecast for Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh in India's southern states.
